The 'sidebar', 'inset', 'flag', 'window' or whatever you want to call it has changed a few times. When the new look branded news first launched the image section was elliptical and edged with a soft red edge. Then the image became squarer and the red soft edge went.
The most recent change was to accommodate widescreen. The inset no longer goes all the way to the edge of the frame, and has gained a bevelled left edge as well as a bevelled right edge. This is to allow the whole image to be seen clearly on 4:3 and 14:9 outlets.

No, I wasn't so keen on the first one they used - looked fine at the time but I think the current one is the best. They also added BBC News at the top and then added the web address didn't they. I just think it sits better with the layout on screen.
