why did they need to take the picture away though

To minimise viewer interuption - i know this sounds odd but it will be far less intrusive to have music and a caption rather than having no sound.

Also you will get thousands of people moaning that the sounds gone and other people thinking that it's there TV

they havent got seperate music for breakdowns this time around Confused

they played the balloon idents breakdown music all of the time at every breakdown but the caption never told us much infomation it just said something like "sorry for the inconvinience we are trying to correct the fault"and the music track changed every few minutes.

Of course it wasn't always like that, "Interference on sound" and "Programme continues in vision only" or similar captions were available at a moment's notice from the good old NODD and could be overlayed over the output.

Red Bee have subtitlers all over the place - for example, I know that Midlands Today in Breakfast this morning was subtitled by someone at Queen Margaret Drive in Glasgow. Overnight subtitling on News 24 is sometimes done by the Australian Caption Centre, which is now owned by Red Bee.

Also, a lot of live subtitling is now carried out by 'respeaking' - someone listens to what's being said, then talks into some text-to-speech software, also reading out punctuation, etc. It's not quite as accurate as stenography, but far easier and cheaper to train people for.

There are subtitlers who work from home. There was an article in the BBC staff magazine a few years ago about a woman who live subtitled News 24 from her house which overlooked the Firth of Forth! She did half an hour at a time and someone else in another part of teh country did the alternate half hours

I am sure its more then possible to have a laptop with remote connection to control the subtitles from the comfort of your toilet Laughing

Now, thats interesting. I just watched the second breakdown and when the sound went the subtitles said "Sound Problems" then 5 seconds later the BBC One caption appeared but instead of the subtitles being what was said by BBC One continuity it continued with what was being said on Breakfast (despite the fact that BBC One viewers couldn't hear this). When BBC One switched back to the Breakfast feed we were treated to the end of a sentence by the sports reporter. Viewers reading the subtitles got the full sentence. I'm guessing that viewers on News24 would have got a much shorter break in sound and the subtitles seen on BBC One represented the audio heard on News 24.

In the second case, BBC One continuity made the problem worse. Although I can't blame them for jumping in quickly as it could have been a minute long problem like the first one for all they knew.

Daft Question probably, but why did Breakfast Transimit from N8 (News 24) instead of the normal Breakfast/BBC NEWS Studio???

And i thaught only GMTV had sound problems and faults!! especially after switching from/to a regional News Broadcast!!

Yesterday was still part of the weekend, and as they usually do Breakfast from N8 at the weekend that's why it was broadcast from N8 yesterday.
