How about B1, B2... Laughing

I like. Yes, lets go with that.

To me, the name BBC Four just sounds more high-brow than the name BBC Three. Perhaps because 3 reminds one of ITV and 4 of the (initially) more high-brow Channel 4.

Well channels in Australia were named after their old VHF frequencies - 7, 9, 10.

They didn't feel the need to rename in the digital era, because the brands are very well known.

how often is the BBC News channel referred to as 'News 24'?

I used to hate the names BBC 3 and BBC 4 because they say nothing about the channel, and brought to its logical conclusion, we might end up one day with BBC 14, but actually I don't mind the names now, it's fairly easy to promote which channel a programme is on.

News 24 however needs its name reinstating. The BBC dropped the 24 because people used to call it "News 24" instead of "BBC News 24", but it's one of those nonsense marketing things; just because people don't say "BBC News 24" doesn't mean they don't know "News 24" is a BBC service.

Agreed and now it gets called "the news channel" quite often. Surely "News 24" was better than that.

Surely they dropped it because the brand was "BBC News" and they wanted the channel to be at the heart of that, rather than an add-on?

But as you say it gets referred to as "the news channel" an awful lot. It was a dreadful decision to drop a name they'd spent 11 years building up. Mind you this is from the same people who doggedly called a station "BBC 7" as it was on other platforms other than radio, then eventually renamed it BBC Radio 7 anyway...there's been a hell of a lot of bizarre branding decisions over the past 10 years.

I would suggest it's because it's more akin to Radio 4 - probably considered the more high-brow of Radios 1, 2 and 4. But why not rename those too? The Light Programme anyone?

BBC Three doesn't have a lot in common with BBC Radio Three.

But BBC Radio 3 doesn't enjoy the high profile that BBC Radio 4 has.

I think it's more the case that after ten years you are used to BBC Four being the high-brow channel. You've associated Four with high-brow programming and Three with what is essentially trash.

When I think of ITV3, I don't think of trash TV. Similarly, when I think of ITV2 I think of trash TV but not when I think of BBC Two. Numbers themselves mean nothing; we've simply associated the channel names with the programming.

No, I can remember thinking it when BBC Three and BBC Four were launched.

You're obviously easily pleased then, because I do! Actually, I never said anything about ITV3 - I said proper ITV, which is on channel 3.

You're missing my point. The name BBC Three isn't trashy in itself, nor is the name BBC Four high-brow. If the channels had launched vice versa you would associate 'Three' as being more high-brow, simply by association.

And with regards to ITV3, that channel is nothing like BBC Three. 'A Touch of Frost', 'Rebus', 'Poirot' and 'Inspector Morse' are not trashy TV. 'Sun, Sea and Suspicious Parents' and 'Don't Tell the Bride USA' however, are.

Well, at least the show Family Guy.

But only because BBC HD stopped showing it mid-way through the season 9 run and now you can only watch it in SD.

I guess if more cuts went the BBC's way and they decided BBC Three didn't warrant it's own slot any more it might end up being merged with Two, Four would obviously then need a new name, but that wouldn't be Three.

Why merge BBC Two and Three. BBC Two and Four have more in common and BBC Three has a more individual Target Audience and more original programs.
