Visually it's nice, musically I can almost say it's good but just one element - the rock-esque drums - doesn't fit quite right to me. Perhaps if they were omitted it would work better.

I must agree with the comment that it now lacks the calmness which worked so well with the previous 'Ribbons' design.

After the logo settles however, I reckon the whole thing levels out nicely and is paced just fine.

And yup, I see it is just a bit like the old ITV3 - perhaps mainly at the point where the blocks are just moving into their final position, I sense it there.

I'm sure it will look impressive, but it's cold and unwelcoming and the ending is especially poor.

Are the visuals supposed to not match the sound, particularly the thud ?

I noticed on the end of When Joseph Met Maria or When Maria Met Joseph or whatever it was called, on BBC One, that there was a new 'BBC Productions' logo on the end of the credit, where the BBC logo turns around to reveal BBC letter by letter.

Is this a new thing, as ITV now have ITV Productions?

The music has also been used on BBC Radio Cross Promotions, 'This is What We Do'. Look out for more of this new BBC Jingle over the next year.

The ribbons might have be calm and unoffending (I also liked the subtle echo of the past with the three colours on it being the same basic colours as those used for the bars in the old BBC logo), but they're also more than a little stale now, with the same ident being used for over 10 years. It's age has become especially apparent since the 2Entertain brand was introduced a few years ago - the two idents just don't like right with each other.

The new design might be a bit brash (but there is also no way they will keep on it for as long as they have the ribbons) but at least it shows an element of graphic design and aren't going to age within months - when I opened this thread I was quite expecting to see some multicultural people ident-esque crap.

Did I also get from the blurb written about it that this ident is going to have a life outside of DVD frontcaps?

Quote:
I spotted in on You Tube a little while ago. It's ok, builds on the 'What We Do' and 'Now on the BBC' promos with the three boxes breaking the branding guidelines

I suppose though that the ribbons ident technically always did break the branding guidelines - the 1997 branding guidelines said that the BBC logo is supposed to appear centre bottom on idents, not centre middle.

very nice, but this marks the end of the television colours which were in the ribbons and the old BBC logo. The one before the ribbons was fantastic.

Circa the 91-97 lozenges era? It was quite, wasn't it. Somewhat eerie but very memorable for it - reflective of the haunting, moody qualities to be seen across other BBC TV symbols at the time.

If anything I would prefer the general BBC brand identity to be short and poignant in the way that was, maybe err on the side of understatement (I liked the gentleness of the score for the Ribbons idea at that) rather than leaning towards a flashy or lengthy form-up.

I wonder if any BBC equipment/stationary etc. still use the ribbons design?

Loads of BBC passes, computer wallpaper and so on still have ribbons branding.

It was known (in the pres department at least) as the 'family' logo. At one point there was a moving ident and a 'family ' clock ready to go should all the channels need to be brought together with common branding.

That is a very interesting thought there.

Will we ever see any of this in image form (that Rhythm & Movement Clock springs to mind), or is it something that shall never see the light of day outside the walls of the Beeb? Shame if the latter holds true, but in any case, a description will suffice...

I take it the family clock was no longer considered from around 2002 when the station clocks on BBC 1 & 2 were dropped?
