I hate the big screens. They are really ugly and dominating. Nobody (in my city) actually watches them, except the tramps on early mornings.

lack of suitable/available location in london is the most likely reason for their lack of screen, and probably siting screens elsewhere is a higher priority - as its a nod towards the corporations "out of london" strategy.

One pops up in Trafalgar Square fairly often

you don't need planning permission for a temporary screen, you do for permanent.

Manchester's one can be fairly well watched at certain times of the day (e.g. lunchtime)

Never?

Although it would be nice. When was this announced Moz?

And there was something on the Wrexham CBC website saying planning permission *had* been granted.

Not heard anything of this lately - they had a temporary one for Live8, which they made a big deal of being the only one in Wales - then Cardiff decided to put one up!

Wrexham's also supposed to be getting a Children in Need concert again this year.

Ahh, Children In Need concerts, Many a happy hour I've spent looking for my wallet...

Quite surprised to be honest that Wrecsam's getting one. One by Greenlands would be good.

There was a big screen, showing cricket, in Canary Wharf yesterday - hundreds of people crowded outside 1 Canada Square. Don't know if it's BBC operated though.

I think that one is operated by Reuters, who have there offices in the building next door.

The one in Manchester is rarely quiet its located by the Triangle and back of Selfridges, with lots of people sitting on the wall thing, usual visitors being moshers.

I've never been fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of one of these screens, but I've always wondered how the sound works. Do they have loudspeakers, or are they silent, relying on on-screen text?

To be honest it's not always moshers any more - the 'mosher' thing is only usually on a saturday - it tends to take all sorts - like one afternoon at 5:35 me and about 100 other people (buisness people, shop workers, kids, adults...) were just sat on the walls watching neighbours.

Its quite good fun watching TV on a big screen with an audience - for example when Isabelle was acting horrid you could here people mumbling that she was a b-tch et al Smile
