It does appear that announcers sign off less now than they used to.

I recall not so long ago - the phrase "from everyone at the Broadcast Centre..." being used before News 24 or Pages from Ceefax... that seems to have gone.

not quite a name check, but on new years eve 2004 the bbc two announcer used a rather formal and old school line ...

"this is direct television from the studios of the bbc television centre in london"

Simon, you always seem to talk as if you're are speaking on behalf of the entire television viewing population in the United Kingdom. However, the fact is, that nobody else actually cares who the hell is announcing. I know you may harp on about a lovely warm relationship between BBC playout and the viewer, but this is not the 1970s, nobody cares.

Rather curious that you should start out by accusing Simon of something that you immediately proceed to do yourself.

You are not speaking on behalf of all the participants in this forum.

This is a TV presentation forum. Announcers play a key part in the presentation of many of the main channels in the UK. Posters on this forum often refer to the style of particular announcers; and rightly so. This is the correct place for such discussion.

The subject under discussion in this thread is therefore perfectly valid.

Announcers also play a key role on this forum, bringing insight and explanation.

A shame, then, that some choose not to ask them directly or even take their answers at face value.

Where's the insight and explanation in this thread, then?

Why should Simon have to go to individuals directly? He is perfectly entitled to raise the subject here to gauge views. Announcers can respond within the thread if they wish, with the added advantage of being able to do so anonymously.

Since you ask:

Is there a new directive at Red Bee asking the annos not to identify themselves I wonder?

As everyone keeps trying to explain to you, Red Bee don't decide on such things. Its staff will do whatever the BBC tell them to do or not to do!

I know the Inspector isn't a CA, but he certainly has many answers. You know that as well as I.

It's not the raising of subjects I'm objecting to, its the constant nay-saying to the answers which are presented (time and again).

It's an absurd state of affairs.

Now come on Gavin - you're clasping at straws there with that particular example! Smile

However, yes, I do appreciate what you're saying. It's one of many reasons why I don't actively participate in this forum. The number of times that I've seen useful information imparted within threads - from reliable sources - only to find on the next page, the same guesswork, conjecture and general nonsense.

Unfortunately, this forum - and many others like it - are awash with idiots. Sadly, as a consequence of the puerile behaviour and content, the more useful contributors tend to steer clear, which is very sad.

As it's of relevance, Duncan namechecked himself before N24 tonight.

Well, Simon...I think we have an answer to your question.

The name check is alive and well - Duncan Newmarch signing off on BBC One this morning.

And just to confirm that over the festive period, BBC Northern Ireland announcers did indeed name check. Michael Selby listed off the names of all current BBC NI announcers on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Day, Paul Reid mentioned those on the rota that day. Mark Simpson wished us all a happy new year at 12.15am on New Year's Day.
