BBC World has signed a deal with Discovery to represent them in the states. Discovery are now actively promoting the channel to cable company's around the country. I believe a deal has been signed with one operator in Texas. Hopefully more will follow.

BBC America has started airing ads that suggest that BBC World is coming to the United States as it's own channel (finally!) "soon."
Anybody hear anything definitive?

Thats good news ArchiveTV

But I wonder if the channel will change any aspect of its presentation before its American launch. For example, its been over 2 years and the main news theme has not been "updated." There is also a channel survey asking whether viewers like the breakfiller so I wonder if that will be tweaked.

Any word on which system that is? (wondering if it's one of the majors or a 'mom & pop' shop)
In any event, I'm looking forward to having it on a regular basis...

No it's a very minor player. However it was also the first operator to sign up for BBC America, so it's a good omen.

I hope they don't change the aspect. I get BBC World News on PBS (all Public Broadcasting Service stations air BBC World News at a certain time in the US) and they recently switched to widescreen, and the result is awful, I think.

Nothing has changed on BBC World in terms of aspect ratio since 1998. The channel broadcasts in 4:3 only, but the cameras in the newsroom are widescreen. Since the channel broadcasts in 4:3, the compromise for the news is 14:9 ratio (with the black bars at top and bottom). As I said, this arrangement has been in place since BBC World moved into studio N9 in 1998.
