Here's the thing about these idents.
For the first month they were in use, they DID in fact use the "one" in the idents, copied verbatim from the originals. They managed to do this because the channel's slogan was "one world". Idents would wipe to this slogan first, then to the BBC America logo. Since then they've excised that part from the idents and wipe right to the BBC America logo. Agreed that this doesn't look nearly as good.
Idents are visible during ad breaks, so they're a little more like stings than anything. They've made several edits of each ident, including unedited versions - I've seen the full version of "Moon", perhaps my favorite of all the current BBC One sequences. News is preceded by specially made bumpers and idents, ostensibly to cover up World's breakfills and countdowns.
The A logo was pulled really quickly (it was introduced in January of that year and I think it was pretty much gone by that June if I recall). The presentation that replaced it looked like it was hastily thrown together. Some of the elements introduced with the target A were kept, but reedited to remove or somehow obscure the symbol. They never went out and said why they changed the presentation, but the suddenness of the logo's disappearance leads me to believe it was due to some legal concerns.
