So is BBC Radio nan Gŕidheal being kicked off to make way for BBC Alba when it's broadcasting, too? That seems a strange decision - both RnG and Alba have overlapping schedules, so when Alba's off air it spends most of the time simulcasting BBC Radio Scotland anyway.

And even then only during BBC Alba's broadcast hours. And only if you have no access to; the internet, another TV platform or a digital radio. The rest are all easily available on FM.

Which has lower coverage in parts of NW Scotland, than DTT.

What? How many people in the NW have DTT, but no internet, FM radio, Digital Radio OR satellite? And arguably the NW is where BBC Alba will be getting the most viewers.

There are far more TV relay stations in the area, than FM radio relays. Forget DAB coverage, that's worse than FM. Internet, yea right, all those >5km exchange lines makes streaming via ADSL a hit and miss affair. Satellite, well yes, but most likely to be impossible in places, low elevation due to latitude, and compounded by some rather large mountains. I agree though, it's probably the heartland for Alba.

Bye bye lovely bugless Tele-G, hello irritatingly defaced BBC Alba.

Good to see the BBC kicking a commercial competitor out of the market.

Were Scottish licence fee payers ever consulted on this - they'll find the space for BBC Alba but have shown no interest nationwide in reviving a much needed second interactive stream.

TeleG was never a 'commercial competitor'. As far as I can tell it never had any adverts and was purely set up by requirement back in the early days of DTT. It carried programmes from the BBC, STV and others, which are now being covered far more widely, and now on ALL available platforms, by BBC Alba.
A 1 hour channel has effectively been replaced by a much larger channel, which has to be a good move. Also, with the news some stations are staying, we're really only losing 4 Extra, 5 Live Extra (which only broadcasts part-time anyway), Asian Network and World Service. And even then only during BBC Alba's broadcast hours. And only if you have no access to; the internet, another TV platform or a digital radio. The rest are all easily available on FM.

Ah, OK. How was TeleG funded then?

I imagine as SDN and later ITV had to provide the service that meant they had to pay for it. Sounds like a cheap as chips service anyway.

Yes, there was a public consultation as part of the wider review of BBC ALBA.

I get the funny feeling the outcome of this had been decided long before the consultation. It's a disgrace losing the radio stations. If people want a Gaelic channel, they should pay for it.

As well as the post above this one - surely by that argument, those who want radio stations should pay for it?
