BROADCAST has today confirmed what we all thought already, that the new BBC Gaelic TV service will be called Alba.

It launches at 9pm on 19 September 2008.

BROADCAST posted:
The new service, run in conjunction with MG Alba, will be available on satellite and cable throughout the UK, with content also available online.

It will be available on Freeview, in Scotland only, after digital switchover, subject to review by the BBC Trust.

BBC Alba will go live on at 9pm on 19 September and programming on the first night will include a new drama starring Greg Hemphill as Elvis and a live concert from the Isle of Skye featuring Scottish musical talent. The channel will also broadcast a wide range of sport, news, children's programmes, documentaries and entertainment.

BBC Scotland controller Ken MacQuarrie said: "The launch next month of BBC Alba is the realisation of a long held ambition of the Gaelic community and an achievement for those who worked so hard to bring it about. BBC Alba will offer a new and enhanced service to the Gaelic audience and will also reach out to the wider Scottish audience by offering a range of attractive and compelling programmes."

Where are they going to find the space on Freeview considering due to the wisdom of OFCOM half of the BBC's space is going to be stolen for HD.

Apologies in advance if i offend anyone but how many gaelic speakers are there in the UK and furthermore Is BBC Gaelic/Alba going to be viable enough to survive?

More than you think, there are a lot of Irish Gaelic spekers who can benifit, a freind of mine is learnin' gaelic, my dad speaks it fluently, and I could get around, I think if it shows show programmes helping people to learn Gaelic it will do well, just as RTE International will do well,
in other words
1 Month Laughing

MuxB/PSB3 (currently CBeebies/BBC4/News24/Parliament/red button streams) isn't regionalised anyway, even for the "Nations", and I doubt they'd go to the expense of ever doing so. It'll have to go on Mux1/PSB1 - but the question of how they're going to fit it in is still a good one. No good can come of this for non-Gaelic speakers*

*Scotland's population in the 2001 census: 5,062,011
*Number of Gaelic speakers in Scotland in the 2001 census: 58,652
*Percentage of people in Scotland that DON'T speak Gaelic: 98.84%
