BBC admit credits are unreadable

But viewers "value" the ECPs (February 2008)

After more than six months the BBC have finally admitted what we told them on Day 1 - you can't read the credits.

Quote:
"Some people have said that the font is too small to read," a statement from the corporation said.

It added: "We are currently looking to enlarge it."

But the BBC said most viewers "make viewing choices while credits roll and value some information on the relevant viewing options available to them across the BBC portfolio".

By enlarge it, I guess they mean the font rather than the size of the credits box.

As for the rubbish of viewers valuing the information - I guess it's the same viewers that value DOGs.

To be honest, we're used to them now so ECPs don't bother me as well as they're well designed and you can still read the credits clearly - something which the BBC's fails on in both counts.

I've never said they should get rid of ECPs totally and I appreciate the fact that many viewers are deciding what to watch next over the credits. However why couldn't we have the old style of half credits and half 'next' or 'coming up' with a simple announcement. This way the credits aren't ruined by becoming illegible and the information is still given to viewers who may have missed (don't know how Rolling Eyes ) what's coming up next.

At the moment though in some instances you might as well just stop the programme before the credits start and run into the junction as you can't possibly read them and there is so much extra stuff promoted that the credits aren't re-enlarged until the production end cap is on (Eg. A Talkback Thames production for the BBC).

Hopefully there will be a redesign to this ECP but I'm doubtful.

The thing with this ECP is it just goes back to the original idea from the 90's of squeezing the credits down to a box for promo information - something which latter ECPs were designed to avoid.

This layout could work if they used the width of the lower third for the credits and ditched that pointless menu, which seemed little more than an afterthought to fill the space.

Another thing I don't like about this ECP is how credits look without it. Due to the reduction for the ECP the credits are so large now they just look completely wrong and stuck in the 70's compared to the ever decreasing font size we've had in the last few years.

I hope not. Under the current guidelines, most credits look stupidly oversized when not being squeezed.

The whole BBC ECP format needs a rethink IMO. If they must have ECPs, they should take a leaf out of Channel 4's book as to how to do it.

I also hate the way the credits appear to jump back a few frames just before the squeeze begins causing a noticeable nasty judder.

I still don't see the point of the ECP at all. Why do I want to know what I missed on their other channels 3 hours earlier Confused

Yes, you've told us time and time again that you record programmes and watch them later, but you're not everyone.

Still not many though - and those that do still watch many live, so for the BBC it is justified.

However, I hate them - I like the credits for the music, some time to 'reflect' - and I don't need a man shouting at me, telling me about his next show. Especially not after every programme.

Now if only they realise how iconic some of the credits sequences are like Doctor Who for instance and let them role uninteruppted.

They really do need them back to the old length
