Possibly due to LOCOG/IOC licensing issues - if they were actively flogging them to the public they would have to be an official merchandising partner or similar. By just providing them at cost price to staff who are involved in producing the coverage they can probably get around that.

NBC are selling stuff with their logo and the Olympic emblem on them.

This is why I hate american "design", some broadcasters make rips of that logo, and that looks much more terrible

My BBC mug arrived this morning - Seeing it I think I'm the mug for paying that much for it but never mind!
