301 HD (I.e. 304) is showing caption and music - anyone with the technical know-how able to explain why, presumably something to do with the athletics/3D setup tonight?

301 itself seems to be showing Water Polo but looks particularly grotty...

The press red prompt has disappeared on the HD mux, wisely as it'd only switch you to 3D coverage you might not be able to watch and a holding caption.

In this case why have a studio at all?

Because there is a lot more than one venue being used, and the Athletics is only one part of the Olympics.

Still don't really see the need for two presenters in one location!

It means less breaks from the atmosphere, and tells the viewer immediately, something big is happening.

It does seem to be working - hated the sudden cuts from venue to studio which do just kill the atmosphere.

On another note if anyone has gone out and recorded tonights coverage they'll find their recording cuts out before the final as the BBC have, at last minute, split it into a separate show from 9.45pm, and unlike the Opening Ceremony night the two slot aren't linked so recording the main coverage doesn't mean the second one will automatically record.

At the last minute? It was scheduled as a separate programme when I checked yesterday, so it has been like that for at least 24 hours. It was not scheduled as a separate programme this time last week though.

Is this presumably to make their ratings look higher?

Earlier in the week I caught 301 HD showing a replay while 301 was showing Olympic Sportsday, so it seems to be played out seperately and simply isn't following the schedule as closely as it perhaps should be.

I assumed it was to make it easier for people to record just the 100m final. (I appreciated it, because it meant I could send a remote record from the pub in case we didn't make it home in time. Though it was a bit of a moot point in the end because we just stayed put and watched it there.)

I'd watch the BBC New at One, if you like how certain camera angles work at the Olympics.

I think that they may be switching to a caption and music on 301 HD (aka 304) when BBC HD are showing 3D coverage - so as to ensure a decent bitrate for the 3D coverage. Given that it is already 960x1080 for each eye, they presumably want to keep the quality up a bit?

They ran a caption and music rather than the BBC HD Preview loop on BBC HD during the day during the Jubilee as well - presumably for the same reason (this time to give BBC One HD a higher bit rate?)

Shame us punters who pay the licence fee can't have a crack at getting these either?

Don't think they are that bothered. Ordered an item, entered my address, paid via PayPal and have had a dispatch email.

Possibly due to LOCOG/IOC licensing issues - if they were actively flogging them to the public they would have to be an official merchandising partner or similar. By just providing them at cost price to staff who are involved in producing the coverage they can probably get around that.
