BBC 2012 - The Olympic Broadcaster

It's almost all over . . . (November 2011)

Back on topic and I wonder if the BBC will roll out their titles tomorrow or if they might hold them back until the opening ceremony and perhaps use their pre-Olympic generic titles instead.

We should at least get to see what OBS do tomorrow and of course confirmation of the graphics. I'm really hoping (against hope) that satnavHD is mistaken and we do get something more like what we saw in the game.

301HD begins broadcasting tomorrow as well - but won't cover the torch relay, with 302 not beginning until Thursday night. It seems both 301 and 302 will close for the opening ceremony - I could just about understand the justification for cutting one stream, but not two. I've asked Roger Mosey is 301 HD might provide an HD alternative commentary feed, but I suspect stupid BBC Trust politics will mean they wouldn't show it if 301 doesn't regardless of whether they need to close 301 HD to protect the BBC 1/BBC HD feeds.

BBC wise I suspect it'll be the full titles on tomorrow's football, it's not like they're going to have anything we haven't seen.

On the graphics front, it would be nice if the BBC could do something with the the diagonal shapes. It would make up for the OBS graphics being a little conservative, but I doubt that is going to happen, given what we've seen on test streams.

If they were to do so, I hope they don't look as bad as this BBC Weather effort I've seen several times today.

What I have in my head look a lot better than those.

Sadly I'm not talented enough to take those images out of my head and into the Gallery.

Those weather caps look awful, but I'm sure it's to be part of the BBC's London 2012 themed graphics:

I think the problem stems with the fact the software they're using is not only quite old, but also is quite limited. I'm always quite impressed with what BBC Weather manage to pull off.

Just been watching SKY News and during the sports news the presenter said... 'You can watch full Olympics coverage on the BBC, including the 24 BBC HD and SD services, and 3D on Eurosport'. First time I've ever seen rival channels promoted. I know SKY have been running the ads but didn't think they'd verbally plug it on SKY News.

I read somewhere that Sky are footing the bill for the extra streams, which may or may not be true but would explain why Sky are pushing the BBC channels so much.

Sky are providing the satellite capacity for the 48 streams (24 HD = 6 x transponders and 24 SD = 3 x transponders) - I believe by reducing the number of transponders used for Sky Box Office. AIUI they aren't charging the BBC for this.

The BBC stipulated that the broadcasts had to be FTA (and thus available to Freesat and FTA receiver owners) and that any branded advertising had to feature the BBC more prominently than Sky - but Sky CAN advertise the 24 streams as being on Sky.

Ah, that explains the "Watch the BBC on Sky" adverts with the mahooosive BBC logo, and a normal sized Sky logo which looks about 95% the size of the BBC one Smile

Yes, thanks noggin. Hoardings feature the BBC and Sky logos at the same size in the different corners of the ad.

Yes - it may be that Sky can't be MORE prominent than the BBC - I think they key thing is that they have to be attributed as BBC channels available on Sky rather than operated by Sky, exclusive to Sky etc. Effectively Sky are providing the capacity to allow the BBC to broadcast them on Freesat as well as Sky.
