iirc aren't the BBC also host broadcaster meaning even more planning is required to ensure that they can provide footage for the rest of the world?

Nope, the Beeb are not host broadcasters. The 'state' or home broadcaster organising the coverage of major events is long gone, ceased about 20 years ago. Same applies to the World Cup Football, and Euro Football.

Even last year's royal wedding had the Press Association as host broadcaster I think ?

Anyway, the Beeb (or ITV, or 4) don't own any TV OB facilities (except for SNG style facilities, and I think the BBC nations still have their own larger trucks ?)

Of course UK companies such as SiS, Visions, Telegenic, Arena will most certainly be contracted in to cover certain events, as well as other foreign outfits.

It seems odd that they are planning this so far in advance... Its 8 months away.

Planning in advance is what happens in business. We moved an office up the road - the planning for that started a good nine months before the move. In the grand scale that was a relatively simple task. Planning coverage of the Olympics is much more complex. Remember that the BBC will be needing to plan not only who is going to present the coverage but also planning who will back fill for these people where necessary. The same applies to those working behind the scenes.

..and also who gets accreditation to go inside the Olympic Park. They're limited in the numbers they can get, which is why they've also got two presentation sites outside the park.

Yes - though it may be nearer 10 than 20 for some sports. That said, local (and non-local) broadcasters are often contracted by the host broadcast organisation to provide coverage for them. The BBC were doing the rowing in Beijing 2008 for instance, whilst SVT and YLE (Swedish and Finnish equivalents of the BBC) did the Athletics and Opening/Closing ceremony coverage I believe. The Australians often do the Swimming etc.

PA had the international rights, but the BBC were responsible for the Westminster Abbey coverage (Visions truck doing the pictures, SIS truck doing the 5.1 sound, BBC Production team)

Yes - and I'd expect Alfacam, Outside Broadcast, EuroMedia trucks etc. may pop over as well in facilities terms. These trucks are then possibly crewed by broadcasters from around the world with production talent specific to specific sports - who will act as producers of the host broadcast coverage... Well that is what has happened in Beijing and Athens I believe. It could be that the UK has enough production talent locally not to need to do as much of this though.

Not so odd they're planning - but strange they've announced it so early. Usually it would all be in the press pack just weeks ahead of the event. Will also bei nteresting considering Gary Lineker has basically been named the main man whether he'll do anything Olympic related beforehand.

Just to say, in terms of Olympic Breakfast . . . Roger Mosey seems to suggest on Twitter that the partnerships will be Bill Turnbull/Hazel Irvine, and Sian Williams/Chris Hollins. Which makes sense, I suppose.

You would also be surprised if Gary Lineker or Gabby Logan doesn't show up at some of the bigger football matches, and perhaps Sue will do some anchoring from Wimbledon as well. And I really hope Lineker doesn't get the Opening Ceremony gig . . . surely Sue deserves to be the first presenter on-screen.

I wonder what BBC Three will do in terms of a studio base? Presumably they will have a dedicated studio. And also will BBC Three have one, long continuous programme or will they split the day up into three or four separate programmes for each presenter.

Won't Breakfast have moved to Salford and Sian have left by the time that any Olympics-related show starts?

I suppose its either a case of Sian and Chris coming back for a few weeks, or those names being substituted with their replacements.

And here it is . . . the first BBC 2012 trailer, to be shown on screen for the first time, according to Roger Mosey, at some stage today.

It seems the 'BBC, The Olympic Broadcaster' logo will appear in more guises than those already seen - including the controversial pink.

And, an intriguing first glimpse of the BBC's 'new three-dimensional blocks'!

Wait... first, haven't the 3D blocks been around in some form for well over five years now? This whole "new" thing isn't very new at all, just seems like they remembered that they had that new corporate logo animation made up and might as well pinch a few ideas from it and call them new.

The logo having other colours (including dreaded pink.. which doesn't feel so dreaded now) I thought would be obvious because once the stoic grey version came around it was pretty clear they'd change the colour depending on the use.

Promo itself, it's a nice teaser trailer, doesn't give an awful lot away as teasers tend to do. What's more interesting to me though is that it seems I'm wrong and they've found their tootling horn. Seems the promo is more about the past than this year from the intro and might be getting ready to do a "look how great we are" promo which would be nice because it's been a while. Makes sense, if there's going to be a reason for the BBC to go do that it's going to be when the biggest sporting event in the world happening on their doorstep.

I'm guessing what will be "the BBC's new three-dimensional blocks" are the... three bright light boxes. That'll be interesting to see how they animate when they go all out with 'em. The logo always looks quite cool as lightboxs. As said they've done it before, so is the new thing that they're really going to use them everywhere? Can't find video but the trailer for U2 = BBC had some nice looking ones (ignoring the branding fail that was in the end).

Not sure what to make of them changing the colour of the logo for everything though. They're a bit... oh, how would you describe a hideously bright range of inappropriate colours... I know! BBC Two endcaps. It's like that.
