It's almost all over . . . (November 2011)

Animations are supposed to be caricatures IMO, not nearly life like but not quite, hency freaky! I do think this BBC promo would be much improved if the animated characters were real people

And then risk the titles being horrendously out of date when one of the athletes break their legs 2 days before the games start?

I do like the sequence, and the animation. I like the 'Stadium UK' idea. But most of all, I'm now massively intrigued by Elbow's First Steps track. Listening to this titles track together with the section used for the Torch Relay trailer and it sounds like this will be an epic piece of music. Very much looking forward to hearing the full version.

27 days and counting!!

I think the Beeb, over the last couple of events, has tried to avoid the obvious, and clichéd use of real athletes, and using actors (which they have in the past) just feels a bit out of place.

I like the use of animation - Beijing was just a lovely piece of art that stood alone (which is a mark of quality) - but I think they have fallen into Uncanny Valley with this. It's a bit too realistic, but not quite realistic enough at the same time. A bit like a good PS3 game. I think they should probably have been a bit more extreme in the caricature.

I love the sentiment of the whole of the UK being the stadium - and think the concept is strong. Execution just not quite perfect - for me at least. That said - it's probably a lot more interesting than what most other broadcasters will use.

Think the music is going to be epic though.

That's a fair point.

BTW any word on the official host version. I assume the OBS handle that but would imagine it probably went out for tender. Usually the host titles don't match the titles of the home broadcaster so I'm don't think they'd be using any variations of the BBC's efforts. And talking of the BBC's efforts I'm hoping (beyond hope) they don't just slap a BBC Sport programme name aston on the end of it - they could get away with it in the simple white text, adding a BBC Sport logo *or BBC Olympic) underneath if necessary.

P.S. Also a "26 days to go" graphic superimposed on the stadium field after Euro 2012 ending with the BBC One circle wipe, which just doesn't look special enough for the occasion. I know the branding rules around the rings are quite strict but surely they could have done something which linked them with the BBC1 circles - and if they could I'd work them onto every ident now for the rest of the month.

That's a good point but sometimes channels will use a celeb in a specific ident anyway. Like Channel 4 with Usain Bolt.

Not totally unrelated ... but should raise a smile:

There's even a bit that's somewhat related to TV presentation!

Interestingly I feel that the gymnastics girl is the least annoying of all, she has something of a Lloyds TSB character look about her and as such doesn't generate the same uneasiness of the others.

The runner's muscular legs give me the boke.

The leaked playlist for the opening ceremony is of course out in the open now, I'll link a version of it off Digital Spy:

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/news/a387937/sex-pistols-eastenders-theme-in-leaked-olympics-opener-playlist.html

Quite a few BBC related TV themes in there such as Eastenders and Doctor Who, wouldn't be surprising if The Doctor did a James Bond and was going to appear at the event in person. We've already seen the Bond sequence being filmed near Tower Bridge, so wouldn't be that hard to do the same with the TARDIS. Laughing

As a ticket holder for the Opening Ceremony who'd like to have plenty of surprises left come that evening would you mind removing details of the tracks from the playlist you've mentioned- or at least putting them in spoiler tags. Cheers

Perhaps you shouldn't read the thread?

I enjoy reading the thread- and contributing where I can- something I hope to be able to do more of once we're closer to the games, and once they are underway.

I was just asking that people be careful posting leaked information for those of us who'd like some surprises come 27th July. No problem with a link being posted- but just as you would for other leaked / spoiler information details could be put inside spoiler tags.

I've no problem with details about the ceremony that have been officially released being posted.

Re: the Doctor - long-term viewers will remember the episode Fear Her - we've already got Huw Edwards commentating on the ceremony, all they need now is persuade Tennant to turn up in character with the flame! Laughing
