The film presentation during that video is a really good watch. It shows how simple it made the whole operation. The problem is that now I feel that they're heading back to the 'zillions' of logos again.

Not quite as bad. All news outlets have the same logo, as do local radio. As sensible Lambie-Nairn's decision was in 1997, you have to remember logos are now seen often without the idents, primarily online, so it's quite important to have it stand out from the crowd.

Although you could say it's enough just to see the BBC logo.

Wasn't one of the big arguments against the old logo that italics didn't render well?
I guess in the days of HD, that's less relevant, but it still looks clumsy.

The flashes were the real problem. When they were scaled down to DOG size they either disappeared, or were so fine that they twittered horribly on interlaced systems, and were a real pain to key cleanly.

Diagonals were and are an issue as well. Ideally you need a logo that works in <SD and >HD resolutions to cope with everything from low-bitrate mobile streaming to UHD.

I liken it to those italic numbers that people have on the front doors of their houses, which look very old-fashioned to me. Definitely a step backwards.

Those slanted blocks are also impossible to centre properly.

Although they seemed to manage with the BBC1/2 logo of the 90s.

That logo was of a different age though when the demands on it were much less - it basically had to appear on two channels, a few strands and although used for radio there wasn't the accompanying websites and social media profiles as there are today.

How did the BBC use this logo between 1988 and 1991 - the only thing I can find on TV Ark is the BBC Sport globe.

Do you mean the /B/ /B/ /C/ blocks (known to most insiders as 'the losenge'?)

You're right in that it wasn't used on screen much, except for some (c) copyright dates at the end of programmes (but even then I think the rounder losenges seemed to appear too). ISTR it did appear at the end of Pebble Mill produced programmes, along with their special swirly BBC In the Midlands logo (which kind of reminded me of the Hanna Barbera swirl...)

One of these reasons of that was how every region/division of the BBC had a separate logo. When Lambie-Nairn came in, they made sure every BBC division used the same format until about the late oughties when it went back to what it was before 1997 but except the current bbc logo was in there.

It was used on lots of stationery, building signage, print media etc.

Though there were also standard regional graphics for the regional BBC One globes post the blue and gold globe (when the solid state animated globe generator aka COW (though apparently not aka COW) was replaced by laser discs and an IPK logogen) and BBC Two Idents with the lozenge logo. (BBC One East, BBC One South etc. were all rendered in the same font ISTR)
