Na, Something was wrong. And Well. It wasn't the sound anyway. Cause he could here her perfectly and we could here him.

I've got the sound clip and there is a bit of background noise on it which could be someone's voice. I'll take a look and see what happens.

Was he on Talkback there because that could have gone down (hence mention of sound problems) and he had to resort to ad-libbing because he couldn't hear the director. That might be why he said 'It's ok' - a bod behind the camera may have asked him if he wants to cut, but he says he can manage.  Possiblity?

Well you have to consider WHERE the live hit was taking place at... he's standing THOUSANDS of kilometers away from Television Centre - across the Atlantic Ocean etc. Maybe there was something wrong with the link-up.

Either that or we can go with cheshirec's guess and that a wasp is pestering the poor reporter. There IS a slight problem with wasps in Edmonton every summer, and today is no exception.Very Happy

Media Grundiad seem to have put it well. The last line effectively repeats the message I put across earlier in the thread!

No pain, no Gainsborough
Poor old Nigel Gainsborough was a non-starter when he presented a piece on the world athletics championships for the BBC Ten O'Clock News on Sunday. His Chaplinesque performance was blamed on 'sound difficulties' but the trouble with his ear-piece did not affect the audience's enjoyment. His two-way interview with the studio in London went to pieces, with enormous pauses and every word interspersed with a stumbling 'er'. He then said 'it's OK' to someone off-screen and carried on, even while the BBC presenter abruptly cut him off. Back to News 24, Nigel.

Talking about DTL's and pains they can sometimes lead to, I will always remember John Simpson reporting for the BBC 9 o'clock news during the original Gulf War. I remember it very distictly as I was on duty that night in the gallery.

He was being monitored 24hrs a day by armed soldiers and they under instructions to shoot John point blank if he said anything Mr Sadman Hussein didn't like.

Anyhow, this particular night, a huge air raid from the allies bombed the capital and he was reporting on the fact that an awful lot of the city had been anyalated. A machine gun was pointed at his temple as he filed his report and one wrong word he was dead.

Thoughout the interview with Michael Burke there were pauses where you could hear voices off and John Simpson 'pretending' to fiddle with the equipment saying things like 'Hello London, can you still hear me'. His voice obviously faultering. Luckily for John the soldier watching him could only speak pigeon english and John is still with us.

He is one brave bloke, along with an awful lot of reporters, ignoring their own safety to bring the viewers and listeners the news. I take my hat off to John in particular, and all his colleagues!

He may be brave but he's also stupid. Why would anyone risk their life for a tv programme.  From what I know of John Simpson he does it because he has such a big ego.

I've a lot more time for the camermen and technical staff who also risk their lives and get none of the glory. When there are fatalitys in reporting it's usually the camerman or sound operator who gets killed.

The BBC I see have sent out Daniella Relph to Canada to cover the Games (1/2 way through the championships!). She'll be on the Six in a few minutes.

It seems it IS back to News 24 for Gainsborough!

Well it's obvious you don't know John then!
And us techys DO get recognised, maybe not by the average punter, but by people who understand what we do, like yourselves.

BTW, Nigel was stung by something.
