I did concede, in my original post, that the junctions weren't so complicated in those days. Automation is indeed a necessary evil to cope with all the extra stuff that's been chucked in, but that doesn't mean one can't look back fondly at the days when fingers on faders meant that you could get everything looking and sounding the way you wanted.
I reckon an ideal combination would be an educated automation system. One you could have a chat with before the junction and say "now, i'm going to do A and B, then I'd like you to do C, D and E all together, wait while I do F and then do Z". Hang on a minute - I think I'm inventing a staffed gallery....
