Did Newcastle ever use the words NORTH EAST under the logo, because I can only remember seing NORTH , which was used at Leeds? In fact, did they ever use NORTH EAST & CUMBRIA ?

It was always "BBC One (pause) inthenorth" until the baloons invented NE&C

Remember of course, as far as Newcastle is concerned, Manchester is *NOT* the north. It's in the upper middle.

I remember that, it used to look really stupid, they'd say....

"This is BBC1 in the North, now North West Tonight...."

they did change it to North West later on, but remember at one point in the early 1990's, North West, North and North East came together for a bit, they also had the weird 'N' logo.

Well for a short time in the COW era Leeds was BBC1 North East!

Looking back at some of my downloads and all the NW Tonight and Look North Newcastle ones in the pre-balloon era all say BBC1 NORTH

From Leeds (and any other Eng region, bar London / Elstree which presumably got issued the all eleven original 2's) the discs would have a BBC1 World, plus only the first 5 of the BBC2 Idents.

When exactly did the Beeb stop playing out idents from the LDs? I'm guessing they were still in use until around, late 90's?

...And why did Wales get to generate a more 'fleshed-out' logo than everywhere else? Confused

On Network BBC 1, Laserdiscs were still used on the analogue services when the baloons started - in fact there were so many baloon idents that they wouldn't all fit onto one side of the disc and the engineers used to have to turn the disc over frequently during a shift as I recall! Eventually, the analogue services moved to using their Profiles for symbol playout. The digital BBC1/2/Choice/Knowledge services used server playout from the start ISTR.

The international channels BBC World and BBC Prime continued to use laserdisc machines for some years after the national channels moved to server. Prime's fireworks symbols (only recently dropped) and BBC World's 2000 identity (the one replacing the flags) all ran from laserdisc. BBC World's famous breakfiller also played from a laserdisc until something like 2002 I think ... We were told at the time of the BBC World /Prime rebrands in 1999/2000 that the blank laserdiscs were extremely hard to find by then and they may have got some of the very last batch to be made... possibly a red herring of a story but it made for interesting chat nonetheless...!

As for the regions, many got VERA servers to replace their laserdiscs. There can't be many of them left in use if any!

We also had the disc shortage problem at the end. Thankfully you could write on sectors of an old disc that had nothing on it so some of our ident discs also had bits of Inside Ulster titles on them.

Cumbria has moved about a bit, in terms of which region it's attached to. At about the time the balloons came in it got moved back to North East from North West.

Leaving that aside, this was the period where a "super-region" was being formed, initially comprising Leeds and Newcastle - and for a time Leeds idented as North East. When Manchester came on board it would have been silly using North East as far as Blackpool and Morecambe so North was adopted by all three regions.

Elstree wouldn't have had any of the idents, they didn't play out their own idents until UK Today became the sustaining news service for BBC1 (1999ish?)

Going back slightly further:

1) Would the Christmas idents (1991-96, possibly beyond) have been played off laserdisc?

2) MHP has footage of BBC2's 1987 Christmas ident rewinding on air. The tape noise does not look like Betacam, however - what other format could it have been?
