BBC 1 Balloon Idents Suggestion

From 1997 to 2002, everyone loved the BBC 1 Balloon idents. I put a suggestion into the suggestion page (knowing that they probably wouldn't do anything) and this is what they sent back:


Dear Luke

Thank you for your recent e-mail.

I understand you would like the balloon ident to come back. While we recognise the popularity of the balloon ident, the feeling was that it was time for a change. The BBC is no longer the only international broadcaster and the globe image does not have the significance it once did. We wanted the new campaign to reflect more accurately the diversity of modern Britain, particularly in light of suggestions that BBC ONE was not an inclusive channel.

I would like to assure you that we have registered your comments on our audience log. This is the internal report of audience feedback which we compile daily for all programme makers and commissioning executives within the BBC, and also their senior management. It ensures that your points, and all other comments we receive, are circulated and considered across the BBC.

I think this is a bit silly but I don't think that they actually grasped my point. The original message was for them to put it on for a wekk not forever!!! Anyway what do you think about the Balloon Idents. Please answer the poll and put any other comments.

Why bring it back? Do you really want things to stay the same forever?

People expected a lot from the next identity, for it to live up to its predecessor, and when they saw it, they were disappointed. If it had been stronger, you probably wouldn't even miss it.

Whoever she is shes definatley pro-heglessy(or watever her name is)

I'm sorry but they are just a piece of history now, it's like asking them to bring back the COW. I'm aware people liked them (and me) but it's 2 packages too late.

And the clock! Always nice to know the ten oclock news was coming on a ten oclock.
Didn't the scrap it because digital has a 12 second delay? In which case how can they do a countdown on BBC News 24 every hour.. surely that has a twelve second delay as well?

No - digital delay as the reason for scrapping the clock is just myth. AIUI it was a marketing decision and nothing more.

I thnk the Beeb are slowly getting back to the globes. Right now, there's a circular theme, and next graphics set, I bet they'll work the globe in somehow.
