I agree with Dan - we moan on here all the time about dull announcements on ITV1 particularly, the BBC are far better at this informal off the cuff stuff.

As for micrphones in studios give me a muff (oooer) anytime - I like to place a condom on our main studio mike - we always practice safe broadcasting here at The Bear!

Steve, you're having a larf arn't you?
BBC making funny quips! its not in the remit.
I'd like to see and hear you having a go at split second continuity, the clock is something the beeb announcer's really have to battle with!

I think many of the announcements on the BBC fall into the 'off the cuff' remit take last nights intro into the late film.

As someone who works in the radio industry I am quite used to split second timing and clock watching on a daily basis Laughing

I applaud you on your radio work and ability to 'talk up to the news on the hour' but when you are up against 'split second timing' and you have at least two transmission controllers shouting into your headphones and you are linking into a networked programme on a networked channel, having to work with an automated transmission playout system with no margin for error and having the abiltiy to do all of that and sound cohesive and off-the-cuff, no one does it better than the ITV1 squad.

I love a bit of sarcasm - oh if only it was as simple as talking up to the news!

So go on tell us ...... Graham, Graham, Paul, Paul, Sasha or Sonia? Which one are you? Laughing

I'm non of them, I'm just a frustrated 'would-be' announcer who applied for jobs so many times I've lined the wall of my outside toilet with the rejection letters!
What I really know about the business you could squeeze into a mike-muff. I once did some hospital radio though!

if you load too much on any one individual in this kind of environment, the 'on-air' product suffers.

Of which of the BBC Nations are you a regular viewer?

I watch BBC West on terratorial TV but can catch any of the regions on Sky Digi and have to say, not one of them captures my imagination....they're all as bland as each other. I've even heard a few of the reporters doing the link into the BBC 10 O' clock news.

BBC West is an English region, and as such does not have a pres dept. Other than the news opts or local trails and programmes, you are listening to the network feed.

In which case, i'm not very impressed. As I said on my first posting, give me the ITV1 team anytime, they sound more 'with us and human'

In which case we'll agree to disagree.

However...

... if you really harbour ambitions to be an announcer you need to broaden your knowledge of how and why the industry works in the way it does. After all, if the BBC offered you a job, would you turn it down because you prefer the way the ITV1 net. annos. do the job?

The ITV1 connunity is all from London (except for SMG and UTV broadcasts), so the BBC are way ahead on that. And even if the ITV1 team were "good", I still couldn't watch for those awful Idents.

I suppose, on a serious note, very few ITV companies are taking on announcers? Do the beeb still have trainee positions?

Yes Yes, but one can hear that they are under pressure, it is inevitable that if you load too much on any one individual in this kind of environment, the 'on-air' product suffers.

And you're basing this on what? It's obvious from what you've said that you have no idea how the Nations work, or have even seen any output which is surprising if you have a genuine interest in becoming an announcer. Even without living in the Nations, there are plenty of examples on the various sites online, and all the output is available on satellite and NTL cable so there's really no excuse.

I feel I should go on record here and say that doing the job of a TV announcer for ITV, BBC London or nations based competently is about as challenging as The Sun crossword. Doing it well is an intuitive skill, so again for the right person not taxing in the least.

TV luvvy gives praise to ITV1 London announcers and has a toilet wall covered in rejection letters ................No, couldn't be, just a coincidence I'm sure Shocked

I agree - to a point. Announcing is something that comes naturally to a good few of those who do the job. But where I disagree is in the level of technical skill which is now required in the Nations - and indeed for Directors everywhere - to compare that to The Sun crossword is unfair. It's the combination of skills there which makes the job more challenging. In fact announcing in the Nations is almost an aside these days to the rest of the job. You ever done the job Banksey???

Living as I do near Bath and getting HTV as my station, I used to love Philips quirky comments, much like the blurb he comes out with on here. He was a real pro on HTV West. So you see, Banksey has done the job.
