As I remember, it was to test bits of kit that got messed up in the big power cut that put News 24's relaunch back in December 2003.

Quote from the thread I started when I heard about the tests in December 2003. The tests affected all channels including the UKTV channels and BBC Radio on satellite I believe...

Anybody actually know what they're testing?

Yes. It is power and UPS stuff in the TX area's of TVC, including coding and mux. Different things different nights.

RBS tests have got nothing to do with anything digital.

Radio Times listings online show that BBC ONE will closedown from 4.00am - 5.00am on Monday 23rd January.

EDIT: Listings for BBC TWO show that BBC TWO will closedown from 2.00am to 3.00am.

Has Coding & Mux moved to BC then ? That's surely a transmission area. And the Satellite uplink dishes are still bolted to TVC?

If we're nit-picking, News 24 transmission and the coding and mux are irrelevant for the purposes of RBS tests!

Will these tests be seen on digital or is it an analogue only affair?

The nature of the tests means it's analogue only.

(i.e. all transmitters lose their BBC1 or 2 analogue feed, apart from Crystal Palace, the idea is to get a picture back to all main transmitters by rebroadcasting from Crystal Palace to nearby transmitters, then from them to transmitters further away, etc, until the whole country has a TV picture again.)

if there is a closedown does this mean that the BBC will air the national anthem on BBC One?
