Bauer rebranding 53 stations to The Hits/Greatest Hits

The majority of its acquisitions last year

Bristol's SAM FM is next in line to be converted, this time to 'Hits Radio', according to a request that Ofcom is consulting on as of today.

Is that just for the name change? Ofcom approved the format change in July according to this, which I thought was strange, as Ofcom says major format changes should not be made within the first two years of a licence. Sam FM’s licence was only re-awarded in December 2018, and it was originally assumed this was the reason why they weren’t rebranded with all the other stations in September.

But then Ofcom approving the format change in July would suggest they could have done all along. Maybe I’ve missed something, but I’m a bit confused by this.

I believe the format change you’ve linked above is for local content hours and location.

The change they went now is to go from an adult alternative format to a current hits station.

Converting adult stations into both Hits and Greatest Hits formats are a mistake IMO. Changing stations that play a mix of new and old music into ones that are either all new music, or all oldies seems quite ridiculous. They really should be converting them into a brand that sits in between the two, such as Magic.

GHR is the station I have on in the car, and I enjoy it, but it's certainly not an adequate replacement for the local stations it's replacing. because the format and music policy is so different.

I’d agree replacing the only commercial offering in an area with GHR isn’t the best move. Bristol is a big city market though. It’s probably the biggest city in the UK not to have a Capital or Hits network station currently (although it does have Kiss), so there is the gap in the market there. Also I imagine there is quite a lot of overlap of Sam FM and GHR so it doesn’t make a lot of sense to have both. Heart is probably the one that ticks the box for mix of older and newer music in that market.
