Obviously sad for those who knew her and EastEnders fans, but in many ways not the worst of news considering her worsening dementia from which she is now free.

Unusual, but not unheard of. IIRC, Stephen Hawking's death was announced in the early hours of the morning.
Sad news. On a coverage point - an unusual time for it to be announced?

Just speculation, but it may have been embargoed until after the papers went to press to give them a chance to give her proper coverage in the Saturdays - no doubt there will be "commemorative issues" with full front page spreads and tribute pull-outs, whereas if it was released in the stop press it would have been a one-paragraph "quick crib some copy from the pre-written obit" job.

Very sad news. No doubt we can expect a tribute at the end of tonight’s episode of EastEnders. Even an airing of Peggy’s Theme would be a fitting tribute.
