Oh dear- anyone spot the cockup on the Radio Times slide just now on BBC1? It was a bit off-centre and had a thick black line over the top!

Is that what my copy will look like this week? Is it a new measure to celebrate 80 years of the RT?

Yup I saw it, rather odd I thought, but I think they stop showing the cover of that week's edition, they usually show a slide with Radio Times over the screen and the announcer waffles on, but I assume they do it like that as it easier obviously.

Why are there two versions anyway? The one showing the cover and the one with the "Radio Times" title slanted across the screen?

What's also interesting is the way they always show the RT slide with the new issue before it's even available to the public and they say "the new issue of the radio times is available...." but it's not available to the public until Tuesday! (or Wednesday if you get it from NTL!)

If you really want a copy hot off the press, you have to work for the BBC!

Talking of the Radio Times, and slightly bending the topic, in this week's Weekend magazine, the listings for UK Gold are labelled "Plus".

Why on earth would you want a copy of the Radio Times when you can get all the info you want earlier than when the Radio Times is published and at a fraction of the price from DIGIGUIDE.

The generic one is for use until a picture of next week's cover is available, or until that issue is on sale - obviously there's no point showing a picture of this week's cover as we're now nearly halfway through the (BBC) week.

The script never includes the phrase "is available".

Isn't it something like "The new issue of the Radio Times contains details of forthcoming programmes along with listings of all major television channels".

Other listings magazines are available of course!.

The entire practice is a bit old fashioned really, what with all other listings mags that there is thesedays having to pay to advertise over on commercial tv

Yes, nearly. About five years ago it was "The new issue of Radio Times contains features and previews on forthcoming BBC programmes, together with complete listings for all television and major satellite channels".

Then it changed to "The new issue of Radio Times contains features and previews on forthcoming BBC programmes, together with complete listings for all major television channels".

It's now "The new issue of Radio Times contains full details of forthcoming BBC programmes, together with complete listings for all major free-to-air and other television channels".

Please don't ask what the last one actually means Laughing

had the itv companies not sold off the tv times, would they be able to plug it (in the same fashion as the beeb do) in non-advertising time i wonder?

i see the logic in continuing to plug the RT, because i think it'd be hard for even the most anti-bbc-phile to argue that there is any other printed listings magazine which gives such detailed rundowns. people are paying over £100 for the pleasure of watching the bbc, so letting them know where to find a proper list (not brimming with soap gossip at the expense of programme descriptions) of whats on seems a reasonable idea to me.

and didn't itv network used to promote some itv/on digital services in non-advertising time?

Yep - looked like the still store was non-sync in vertical terms (most digital mixers will line sync these days) - it hopped a couple of lines whilst it was on-air.

Isn't it sometimes the case that the generic Radio Times still is used if the cover features a major ITV programme?
