I haven't understood yet as to why ITV haven't looked into getting rid of advertisements during the programmes, couldn't they just take the 3 minute block between each programme and add a minute onto each break within the hour, surely more viewers would stick around if the programmes followed on from one another.

I'm sure that they used this once, and I'm sure it was on a Saturday night, don't ask me when though.

We have discussed this in more detail: Structure of ad breaks Basically OFCOM (and even EU IIRC) rules prevent more adverts within programmes than there is currently (i.e. 1 break in 30 mins, 3 in 60 mins) - with OFCOM only allowing internal breaks of 3.5 mins, with a maximum of 12 minutes per hour (average 7, 8 in primetime).

So the max no. of ads would be cut to 10.5 minutes an hour - however, it could be done - and keep an eye on ABC1 as when they introduce ads at Easter they will not run them in between two programmes.

Another question - why does Aussie TV work around the half-hour - most progs begin on the half hour while here and in the US it's on the hour

I've wondered that myself! I remember that here (on ITV) the weekend schedules (say between 6pm and 9pm) were based around the 15/45 minute marks, because of a 15-minute news programme at 8.45 or 9.15, but now shows tend to start on the hour. Pretty much all the Aussie channels start their hour-long shows on the half-hour during the evenings.

I think its just how its come to be an is ingrained in teh industry and as a result the classifications are defined for the hour blocks on the Half hour with G rated shows on before 7pm. from 7pm-8.30pm they can be up to PG. 8.30-9.30 M, 9.30-10.30 MA content, 10.30-11.30 AV content.

So the only way to have netwoks start on the hour is if these guidelines are changed.

Who've thought "Auntie ABC" will board the digital bandwagon.

um, Refresh for our viewers how the commercial networks have entered the digital television universe (ie any plans for a digital channel version of each, or whatever)...

Aunty has once before had two extra digital channels. ABC Kids and Fly. They got dropped in 2003 due to budget problems (damn federal government).

The only other network that has an extra channel is SBS (government and commercial funded) and that is a world news channel.

The commercials have shown multi-view channels and stats channels before. Also, Nine has shown the BBCi series's Pompeii and Coliseum. Only the government owned networks are allowed to multi-channel (with tight restrictions)..

Australia has gone down the road of HDTV which is one perk of digital where you can recieve amazing picture quality and 5.1 stereo sound.

Some channels are protesting and want to multichannel but that ois not on the cards. Only the public broadcasters can multichannel.

Although we have three stations (ABC, SBS and Seven) that transmit at 576p (what users of the DBA Forum (www.dtvforum.info)) calls this so called HD resolution. The other format used (ABC used to use it before they changed the channel arrangements for ABC 2, ABC Guide (which will be a VPG but also most likely will have a MHP based interactive EPG)) and adding DiG Jazz) is 1080i but the bitrate isn't high enough in most areas (around 11-12Mb/s).

You can now watch Australian TV LIVE 24/7

go to this site http://www.digitalcentre.com.au/g/785/live-tv-channel-7-melbourne.html to watch Channel 7 Melbourne

go to this site http://www.digitalcentre.com.au/g/856/channel-9-tv-live-melbourne.html to watch Channel 9 Melbourne

so you can watch all the other aussie shows or US imports that haven't landed in the UK yet. And watch it with all the breaks in the right places.

www.ebroadcast.com.au is a good tv guide. Just remember to add 1 hour to the cheduled time to find out the GMT

ie AEST 16 March 7.00pm = GMT 16 March 8.00am
or AEST 16 March 7.00am = GMT 15 March 8.00pm

As I said in the Home & Away thread, I can't get it to work Sad

The only two Seven programmes on over here I think are Home & Away (Five) and My Resturant Rules (Living 2).

H&A airs 8am over here, that'll change when the clocks go forward here, and back there.

I love everything about Seven presentation. It's just so "now" and fresh, whereas everything on ITV and BBC seems stuffy.

What I don't understand though is why they didn't do all their credits like this, in a generic fashion? (Prog title on left, credits on right) It's very easy to fit a promo in on the left hand side - indeed on H&A over here Five do it all the time.

I've tried doing a really s**t version here - crap mock I know but do you see where I'm going with it?

lol for one theres less promo space than what they use for now. I think its very difficult to do that and it would be inconsistent as there would be international programmes that would have to be made in a generic look. Channel 9 are starting to do what you have said allowing local programme makers to sideline the credits in the show look.

Making all the credits of every single show look identical i think makes the viewer used to the format and teh setting. It ensures that they will eventually tune out the red area underneath the vision to make sure viewers continue watching all the way through.

Just take a look of Survivor: Pulau credits. The first is the international version (shown on channel 9) the second is from CBS. They both contain the same credits and the same in vision content. However CBS choses to re-format it. For one it keeps everything uniform, all show credits look bland like this so viewers get used to it. Also as a bonus they use the bottom for promotional space (seven sees no need to do this as their major objective is to create flow)

Are you sure the link doesnt work? Because i tried it and it works fine. Si-Co has had no problems that i know of. The video is on a box on the web page.

Tell me what do the my restaurant rules 'international' credits look like? All ive seen are the generic sponsor logos ones.
