Aussie Commercial TV generally consists of American style game shows then the news (local, national and international all in one programme from the local capital city) then a current affairs programme (Quite trashy makes "Tonight with Trevor" very high brow) followed by lots of American Imported programmes or some low budget Aussie offerings like Blue Heelers or sport..... that's about all I thankyou - think Channel 5 UK.....

Well lets not say that Australian Shows are Low Budget, they are compared to American Shows. One episode of an australian drama costs a network roughly the same amount of money as the rights to air three high budget and high rating American Imports.

Australians also tend to turn off from Australian Drama having been accustomed to the big budget American offerings that are often much more polished.

British shows are very rarely seen on Australian Commercial networks as most are just too slow paced for an Australian Audience. They tend to air on the ABC or on the weekend on commercial networks to get older viewers to watch.

I would think that Home and Away or All Saints are the highest Rating Australian Dramas. However, Real Life Doccumentary shows such as Border Security and Medical Emergency are currently the highest rating Australian Shows.

Seven started airing Inspector Morse, A Touch Of Frost, Inspector Lynley, Rosemary & Thyme and even last night, Prime Suspect. Why seven?

I might be a noob but whats the channel system there? I've only ever heard of 7,9 and 10 and if these are the only stations why "7,9 and 10"? Are they owned by the same network and if not, why don't they call themselves by their proper company names (like BBC1, ITV1 etc...) or are they similar to the channel 4/5 naming scheme?

Thanks

Similar to the 4/Five channel numbering.

Ten is owned by Canwest.
Nine is owned by the Packer's Publishing and Broadcasting Limited
Seven is owned by Kerry Stokes

ABC and SBS are government owned and funded stations. SBS is kinda like Channel 4 in the way that it is allowed to put advertisments on but it still gets funding from the government.

ABC is like the BBC except it only has 1 analogue channel and an extra channel on digital called ABC2.

As for why Seven, Nine and Ten, it does have something to do with the old VHF numbers allocated to the stationd.

Regional affliates are:
Southern Cross Ten (Ten programming)
Prime (Seven programming, also owns GWN in WA)
WIN (Nine network programming, most of Australia)
NBN (Nine network programming, small coverage area (Newcastle to the Gold Coast)
Southern Cross Television (Seven/Ten affliate in Tasmania. Will have Seven only programming when analogue is switched off).
TDT (jointly owned by Southern Cross Broadcasting and WIN. Ten network programming)
7 Central and 7 Darwin (Owned by Southern Cross Broadcasting. Seven network programming)
Imparja (Remote area broadcast service (transmitting via Optus C1). Nine and Ten programming).

Also, two Nine network stations are not owned by Packers' PBL They are Nine Adelaide (Southern Cross Broadcasting) and Nine Perth (Sunraysia Television)

if the stations had proper numbers, they would be in the following order:
CHANNEL 1 - NINE "STILL THE ONE"
CHANNEL 2 - ABC
CHANNEL 3 - SEVEN
CHANNEL 4 - TEN
CHANNEL 5 - SBS

Seven probably have an output deal for those shows. Seven suffred last night at the hands of Prime suspect coming in 4th behind the ABC in Melbourne and 3rd Nationally.

On another note, i saw the channel 4 logo at the end of an episode of Last Man Standing, Sevens new local drama that has been struccgling since it premiered off the back of Desperate Housewives failing to utilise the 2 million viewer lead-in. I suspect it was partially funded by Channel 4.

Heres a trailer/ecp, the 4 logo gets flashed for a split second, blink and you'll miss it.

That's Prime's logo over here, except for the font. The one before it had the "turn it on, turn it up now" jingle, modelled after Nine Australia.
