the best tv logos ever made in my view were the ATV zoom and the Central cake.

i'd bring back a combination of these 2 idents.
start of ATV logo finishing with the Central cake.
i'd definitely use the ATV zoom music.

does anyone else agree (or disagree)?

OK, the ATV zoom was great, but great IN IT'S TIME - It can't come back. Having an ident start with three primary coloured circles with 'In Colour' at the bottom of them was allready a bit dated in 1981, 20 years on it definately couldn't be used. Why does it get used in clip shows? Partly because anyone over 35ish would remember it, but what about the younger audience who isn't interested in TV presentation who has never seen or heard of ATV before? Why is it used on them? Because it looks OLD.

The Central cake on the other hand could still be used today, but it's been scrapped and that's that. If the Central name returns (although it looks increasingly unlikely now) the logo will almost certainly just be a text based arrangement of the letters (although hopefully not just 'CENTRAL' written in a boring font like Gil Sans).

I wouldn't expect to see the cake back ever. But as an idea, yes it would be great to have it back, but not married to the ATV zoom.

Well I've done a shot at it, really, really, really sorry I had to upload the image but it's the only way for me at the moment. In the next week or two I will hopefully find an easier way. Sorry about the cropping-I had to size it down. The spots come on (Notice the 'IN COLOUR' is removed) and then would obviously merge into a white one,the horizontal lines would draw themselves onto the spot and then the vertical line would quickly zoom up the screen while 'CENTRAL' is fading in. After the full name has faded on, the colour's would suddenly appear and the blue fades to black. What do you think?

it looks fantastic from the designs alone.
i can imagine this on the telly.
i can't wait till you or someone else takes it one step further and designs it in real movement with the jingle added.

Get over it people - ATV and (to a lesser extent) Central are names from the past - THEY ARE DEAD, gone, capesh.

Like it or not Carlton are here to stay for the time being, and the only way I can see things going is for ITV1 to become a national network, with the current regional licences providing programming for the network and limited local programming, like that on the main BBC channels (i.e. regular local news, and a weekly 'regional' programme).

I honestly can't see the situation with ITV having three multiplexes on Sky to provide just one channel over the country continuing very long.

Sorry to go slightly off topic, but I feel these are valid points related to ITV (although this topic was originally about the past setup and I've sort of gone onto the future).

This is true, but it depends whether people are trying to present this as a viable future (which it isn't, and it's silly to think it will be) - or if they're just being nostalgic about the past (which is fine - I love the ATV Zoom/Cake amalgamation in theory!)

The first is just being silly. The second is fun!

i know it's doubtful we'd ever see it for real but in the world of tv websites it's nice to at least imagine what things would be like had things not taken its current course.
the design we've got on this thread is a good example although i know we'd probably never see it on tv.

Playing around with old idents is fun! http://web.ukonline.co.uk/tv.home/forum/emoticons/cheesy.gif
I do like this idea of the merging of the two idents. You could do similar things with mixing the two Central globes, or the coloured globe and the cake, or...

i like seeing these designs. if only they were reality but at least we have them in here.

btw, if anyone can come up with some alternatives to 2 idents in 1 then please post it.
it doesn't necessarily have to be ATV/Central.

I love your mock Billy!

BTW Does anybody have software for producing animated GIFs? You know, that little used tactic for animations, where you take a series of still GIFs or JPGs and put them into a sequence that automatically plays wherever it's inserted into an HTML document?

Does anybody know where I could download an animated GIF generator? I can find plently of sites that tell you how to make them WITH THE RIGHT SOFTWARE, but I can't FIND the right software!!! Sad

Jasc's Paint Shop Pro (versions 5, 6 and 7) has a very good Animation tool as a seperate part of the package - you can download a free trial version from download.com. The full package is £70 though - there's most probably a free alternative on that site as well.

Appologies if I offended anyone with my earlier comments - I just don't really see the point of these things, but there's nothing wrong with remembering the 'old days' I guess.
