My idea of a good schedule:

1.00 One O'Clock News
1.35 Trashy soap opera - Doctors , Neighbours , Home and Away
2.05 Trashy US import crime drama - Diagnosis Murder , Murder She Wrote
2.45 BBC News
2.55 CBeebies
3.30 CBBC
3.30 Cartoon(s)
4.00 Programme 2
4.30 Programme 3
5.00 Blue Peter
5.25 Newsround short update - the main bulletin is moved to CBBC

5.30 Game show (ideas, opportunities)
6.00 Six O'Clock News

The main aim being to clear up the messy 5.35 slot by moving the main Newsround bulletin to CBBC and replacing it with a short update.

To me it is clear that the BBC want to put a ratings winner in the 5.30pm slot, as it is likely Neighbours will still occupy the slot, just on a different channel. Therefore because the Weakest Link already has its own fanbase, it would be an ideal replacement. The trouble with the decision of moving Doctors to the 5.30pm slot, is does it appeal to the audience at that time of day, and will it be able to hold its own, something, which i don't think to be true, remember it only does so well at 2.05 is because of the audience it inherits from Neighbours, when Doctors first started it aired at 12.30pm, and did not do as well, i also remember the first series of Doctors being repeated at 7pm on BBC1, which also attracted poor ratings. Doctors works in its current slot at 2.10, and will probably work at 1.40 when it is moved in a couple of weeks time, but i do not think that the audience would be as intrested at 5.30pm.

Why not just do a complete revamp?

as CBBC could be getting the bucket soon as 4 years time

Having watched Weakest Link the other night there is simply no editorial need for it to be 45 minutes. The amount of game play was eclipsed by Anne's exchanges with the contestants.

Isn't that the appeal though?

Maybe they should cut out Anne's banter altogether... I mean, "Queen of mean" is like SOOO last century girlfriend!

Yes, but it shouldn't overtake the game.

I like to see how close people get to the £1000 and curse when they throw away a large amount with a wrong answer!

Those aren't "lingering moments" though. The clock keeps ticking and they cut away to the next contestant who is always more concerned with hearing Anne's question over the background, albeit quiet, music.

I might also say that had it not been for the promised banter with la Robinson I wouldn't have bothered flying down to Pinewood.

Fair enough to believe, Gavin, that however the game pans out has no bearing on the amount of "chat" recorded, and that how much of this is used depends on how the game goes (ie. one or more "hit targets", more time for banter)?

Surprised to hear the contestants actually here the music. It is absent on out-take clips.

censorship reasons?

what's been cut?

Sorry for the late reply - and the topic has moved on - but one of the most memorable examples of censorship in Neighbours was in 1992 (BBC tx date) when the whole storyline of Lucy's affair with her half-brother Glen was cut. Some episodes were substantially shorter than usual, and so much was cut from some episodes that the BBC spliced two or more Aussie episodes into one 24-minute Uk-format episode.

These episodes went out uncut on the UK Gold repeat, interestingly. Prior to this I thought that UKGold purchased the BBC-format episodes and retained any original cuts.

Are we sure Neighbours will go out at 5.30pm on Five?I thought they would prefer showing it at 6.30pm as its a later timeslot and would avoid them having to move Five news at 5.30pm.
