By the way, you're probably all aware of this, but it seems The Weakest Link is now the most likely option to replace the evening episode.

I'm going back 20-odd years, but does anyone remember Masterteam with Angela Rippon in the 5.35 slot before the days of Neighbours? It was a good old fashioned straightforward quiz show without any gimmicks or frills and worked really well in that slot. I'd love to see something like that make a return.

Oh yes - remember it fondly. (How about First Class - I think - with Debbie Greenwood...?)

** EDIT - seen others remember First Class and Fax ***

How about another 80s show - "The Show Me Show"?

Was it First Class that featured the computer game 'Paperboy' or did it have that track and field game... or both?

I think they changed it - I remember both!!

censorship reasons?

what's been cut?

IIRC, some scenes that the BBC deemed not entirely suitable for early afternoon and/or immediately after Children's BBC.

Slightly hazy memory here, but didn't they have to cut some scenes involving Todd and Phoebe in bed together?

Well according to today's Sun it was confirmed yesterday the Weakest Link will move to BBC1 and take the slot. Confirmed by whom I don't know.

It's the least imaginative solution IMO and once again it's a case of raiding BBC2 to solve a problem on BBC1 - passing the problem on. It also is the death knell to CBBC unless they move the block to BBC2.

Surely the obvious option would have been to repeat Doctors at 5.30pm - virtually no cost and having limited impact on the schedule. Indeed, they'd be no reason why Doctors couldn't lose 5 minutes a day to fit into the 5.35pm slot.

I see this move as the BBC experimenting with the 1.40pm slot to see what would work after the news. I'm sure they'd experiment with the 5.35pm slot if Neighbours could be suitably moved but unless CBBC finished at 5pm with Neighbours following it I doubt it. It would be a bad move to have Blue Peter say at 4.30pm.

At the moment it's just paper talk but if the Weakest Link did move to BBC1 it would in my opinion screw up the schedule. What are the options?

1) Cut the Weakest Link to 30 mins: Would cut the number of contestants and therefore cut the whole viewing pleasure
2) End CBBC at 5.15pm: It would mean moving Blue Peter to 4.40pm which firstly is a bad time to air a long running, popular programme and some kids might not be home in time to see it
3) Move CBBC to BBC2: It could work but it would leave BBC1 with a bigger gap to fill and current BBC2 afternoon programming is not suitable for BBC1. If CBBC did move and the BBC filled the slot with a movie it would be like Five and a poor decision.
4) Show A Repeat of Doctors: It could work as it might attract more people into watching it as they would be at work during the afternoon. On the other hand it might cause a dip in the ratings.
5) A New Programme: A quiz show perhaps? Would have to be around 25 mins, no longer no shorter.
6) Move the 6 O'Clock News to show the Weakest Link in full and not move CBBC: Distarous and won't happen

Having watched Weakest Link the other night there is simply no editorial need for it to be 45 minutes. The amount of game play was eclipsed by Anne's exchanges with the contestants.

It can easily be done in half an hour.

But what you have to remember is does the beeb produce enough new episodes for it to 5 days a week all year? Remember this would mean the earlier, 45-minute ones could no longer be shown!

I think it's much more likely the beeb cut or move the amount of cbbc:

Arrow 1:00: One O'Clock News
Arrow 1.40: Doctors
Arrow 2.10: Murder she wrote/ Diagnosis Murder
Arrow 2.55: News update
Arrow 3.00: CBBC Lazytown or equivelent
Arrow 3.20: CBBC Program 2
Arrow 3.35: CBBC Prog 3
Arrow 4.05: CBBC Prog 4
Arrow 4.35: CBBC (New slot! or add onto Newsround)
Arrow 4.40: CBBC Blue Peter
Arrow 5.05: Newsround
Arrow 5.15: Weakest Link
Arrow 6.00: Six O'Clock News

I reckon thats pretty much how it will go as well. And they've still got space to play around with the Doctors slot when it takes a break for The Afternoon Play or suchlike.

I don't think CBBC would claim back any time lost from 5.15pm - it would just be a way to cut the hours.

I'd imagine though if Blue Peter etc. is pushed back they'd move Newsround back to before it at 4.40pm, with the flagship show then ending CBBC in the 4.50-5.15pm slot.
