That timing makes sense Mark, weren't the IBA planning to take the old 405 line YTV aerials down to make space for the radio aerials?

Could well have been, although I think the Tx's being prepared were only small single rack 1kW output jobbies, and they were in the equipment room at the top of the tower, so not much in the way of Tx aerials would have been required. I was in that room this summer, and saw the two ILR Txs in there, including their combining unit, it was only 4 bays worth of kit, and they feed a couple of Siras strapped between the old VHF and existing UHF cigar tubes

A similar modest arrangement was probably all the Beeb had planned

I wonder if they had a plan B to feed Winter Hill, had Emley service not been set up and it had been required? WH is a relay of Holme Moss for radio.

I think you're right in so far as it takes its feed from HM, but it is termed as a 'Main' station, so I suspect there's a baseband iteration there, so relatively easy to arrange a feed from elsewhere ?

In fact, when Peterborough collapsed 5 years ago, its three relays (which are transposers) were rapidly retuned to alternative parents.

So did test card J make an appearance last night?

I can't see any reports of it having appeared, so I assume not. The date given by Blake Hill seems to have mixed up the date for the night, with the date elsewhere being, which is tonight. It being tonight sounds more likely as previous tests have been the first working Friday of January, however as I said before it now seems to have been delayed.
