Thankfully ITV have changed their stance on the use of animated endcaps over the last few years after preventing their use.

I would be interested to know of any occasions that ITV companies have used their animated ident at the end of programmes instead of the traditional still endcap.

The examples that I am aware of mainly date from around 1988-1989, prior to the launch of the first ITV Generic look, which included a standardised style of production slide. I guess that with the dropping of pre-programme idents the year earlier, companies were anxious to still be noticed on the network.

I am aware of the following being used on the network, and would welcome further examples,

Central - The first to launch an animated endcap in 1988. This was the first time that the Central "cake" had been seen throughout ITV.

Anglia - Started using short after Central did. The Flag/Standard animated on screen, but used a short version of the (then new) music, which I have never seen on any TV related websites.

Scottish TV - Circa 1989. Featured a "still" of the thistle, but with music and lightflashes passing across the logo.

TVS - I'm sure that on the final episode of the TVS comedy "That's Love", half of the ident was shown (the "flower" revolved into the TVS letters) No special music used, the animation was shown whilst the programmes end credit music was played. I am not sure of this, as when the programme was repeated, a standard TVS "still" was used.

Yorkshire TV - A special animation was used to celebrate 21 years of the franchise during 1989. This was used for a short period before the usual "still" was reintroduced.

The only other example that I can think of is shown on the end of colour editions of "The Avengers", made in the the late 1960's. The ABC letters move position and spell out Associated Bristish Corporation, although I'm not sure if these are edits made for the American market.

Any other occasions would be most welcome!

Back in the 1960s Rediffusion, which then had the weekday franchise for London, had, a revolving sun at the end of its programmes with "Rediffusion London" underneath. Earlier, when it was Associated Rediffusion, the sun symbol didn't move.

And the sun, or 'adastrial', can still be seen on TV today as the name 'Associated-Rediffusion' and the logo were bought by Victor Lewis-Smith for his production company.

animated end-caps....

most famous - Central
then came Anglia, TVS and Scottish.

to be honest I would prefer the animated startcaps they were far more interesting and fun to watch.

Thames, Central, ATV (fantastic), Angia, Southern, LWT, TVS, YOrkshire (Liquid Gold chevron), HTV (wow!) were the best ones!!!!!!

Most likely as that broke ITV's endcap policy, you're not meant to have any sort of slogans (I think) that's why it went pretty quickly - next day I think?

I find that terrible. I have an old TV that does not have Widescreen and every time I see it over 30% of the logo is cut off. If I ran ITN I would have it in the centre of the screen with the caption: An Independant Television News production for ITV. But then again if I did run it there will be other major changes...

Good. Maybe it'll encourage you to buy a WS television.

It's about time so-called safe zones were dispensed with completely.

The problem with that is the ITV News isn't widescreen, but someone at ITV decided that the news needs cropping to 14:9 on digital.

You are aware 16:9 TV's have safe zones as well but most don't cut off extremely as old 4:3 TV do, btw Daniel B ditch that old TV, it's restricting your viewing. Wink

I'm proud of my 4:3 set. Anyway I think that 4:3 safe zones should remain for a while. I don't like this 'Cybus Industries-style' upgrade culture. I think upgrades are fine. Though it doesn't take long for older versions to aquire the 'old' tag.

Anyway, how long have itn had their previous endboard?
Didn't their last c4news endboard have the '4' animate?
