I've never actually seen the liquid gold used as an endcap, shows I've seen from Yorkshire from 1988/89 just have a static endcap, maybe it didn't last long? As I've said though, I know they were still attatching it as a frontcap through to 1989, even if it wasn't broadcast by most regions. They presumably did spend a lot of money on it in 1987 after all, and probably weren't happy about frontcaps being dropped a matter of months later.

Would I be right in thinking that the cake was initially a 2D black and white logo, designed for corporate letterheads etc because a black and white still of the 1982 and 1983 logos appeared somewhat unsatisfactory.
There was a 2D monochrome logo used in the very early days before the stripey logo. It wasn’t quite the same as the cake, using horizontal lines to create the crescent shaped shadow, with the rest solid white. It can be seen on the launch promo from about 4.40 in this video...

I also don’t remember liquid gold being used as an endcap. They definitely used this though...

I saw liquid gold used as a front cap on “The New Statesman”, but this was on a repeat (UK Gold, maybe?) about 15 years ago.
It was when the former Paramount Comedy channel showed The New Statesman, the liquid gold front cap was kept. They are also intact on the Network DVD release of the series too. Worth noting the original Granada/VCI DVD release did not have any of the frontcaps.
I remember they showed an episode of TNS on ITV1 in 2008/9 which surprisingly had the frontcap intact.
Going off topic, but I remember UK Gold repeating The New Statesman during their mercifully short G.O.L.D. era (sans frontcap)- this was during the time they had "made by the BBC, shown by G.O.L.D." in the continuity announcements of BBC shows- but for some reason they had it leading into The New Statesman as well, on all the occasions I saw it during that run. I'm not sure how they made that mistake (apart from the fact BBC1 did show a special episode in 1994- but that isn't what was being repeated).
