Surely that 'Audience with Jasper Carrott' show mentioned in Wikipedia refers to a completely different show? Sounds like the name was re-used a few years later coincidentally.

An Audience with Jasper Carrott was a series on Channel 4, which went out before ITV aired An Audience with Dame Edna. Funnily enough, a majority of people still consider Dame Edna's to be the first.

Plus I think I caught last weeks where Christine Bleakley opened the programme, but doesn't feature in tonights which is about Celine Dion.

Is Christine doing new 'An Audience with...' shows?

I saw her front the Simply Red farewell show a few weekends back - but that wasn't 'An Audience with...' it was a different format.

That was my mix up. Christine just presented a stand a lone programme based on Simply Red for the Last Time.

And all these An Audience with's are old programmes

The "30 Years" series over the summer implies that Dame Edna is regarded as the first (what with that being transmitted in 1980 and the Carrott series a few years previously).

ITV seem to have various formats a bit like 'An Audience with', there is 'For One Night' which have featured Rod Stewart and Phil Collins. Simply Red was 'For the Last Time'.

Don't know what determines the format of these types of show, but I guess 'An Audience with' is in front of an invited studio audience. Don't know if these other formats are.

Looking through the history of the show, the scheduling of these seem totally indiscriminate, some years going without any at all. Looks as if the format has been rested a few times as well with long breaks between 1990-1994.
1994 was a vintage year, Bob Monkhouse, Jimmy Tarbuck and Ken Dodd !

Only had one this year, with Michael Bublé. After they'd made a big deal about the anniversary this year, you'd think they might make some more.

I'm surprised there has never been one for Peter Kay.

An Audience with Jasper Carrott was actually on ITV, but it wasn't An Audience With as we know it, because it was simply a stand-up show. The reason for the name was that Jasper always spoke to and worked off the studio audience, with the cameras simply observing, as opposed to the style of the time which was to address the viewers at home first and foremost. But there were no celebrities, nothing. Apart from the fact it was an LWT production, it has nothing to do with that format - and when ITV3 have repeated it, they've always billed it as The Jasper Carrott Show, presumably to avoid confusion.

When they did The Best Of An Audience With for ITV's fiftieth anniversary, they included a show with Muhammad Ali, which was actually billed as Muhammad Ali's Greatest Hits, but it was the same format, and that was in 1979, so you could call that the first.

Quite a lot of the Audience Withs were first shown on Channel Four in the eighties, Billy Connolly and Kenneth Williams are two examples.

Yep - they also had "Saturday Night..." cf Saturday Night Divas, and "...Mania" cf Abbamania formats which were occasional shows?

I stand corrected. Embarassed

I'm surprised there has never been one for Peter Kay.

I think his little stint on AAW Take That had Peter pretty much covered. Very Happy

That would mean him writing new material though Laughing
