Alan Carr's Epic Gameshow

Pretty much a retake on Gameshow Marathon in my opinion. (May 2020)

If they do a second series of Epic Gameshow, it'll be interesting to see which gameshows they choose. I'd say Blankety Blank and Name That Tune would be my guess but they could also have Sale of the Century.

On twitter we had two myths being complained about

Firstly that ‘bully’s Special prize’ on the prize board wasn’t a speedboat, even though it never was. You’ve got Peter Kay to thank for that.

Secondly later, that the actual star prize wasn’t a speedboat. Of course in reality it wasn’t always a speedboat, it could also have been a Mk1 Ford Fiesta or even ‘Bully’s shopping spree’

I don’t think Sale of the Century or Name That Tune have enough awareness for anyone born in the last 35 years. They don’t even get shown on Challenge.

You would probably expect most of the games to same the as last night with a couple of new ones. If Gameshow Marathon is anything to go by. Unless any of them are picked up for a full series.

I'd rather a full series of Play Your Cards Right, Take Your Pick or Strike It Lucky than another series. If it did return though I'd certainly drop Bully and add in Wheel of Fortune. They have said in interviews they looked at 3-2-1 but felt it too complicated.

Most of the other primetime shows I can think of can be ruled out due to having revivals of their own, and though they could dip into daytime with the likes of Chain Letters and Give Us a Clue I don't think there is enough recognition really.

Wheel of Fortune is owned by Sony so it's unlikely to feature on Epic Gameshow which were Fremantle formats apart from Bullseye.

I notice in the US, Press Your Luck has been revived but I don't think it was successful in the UK so Talkback wouldn't consider for Epic Gameshow.

BULLSEYE: I was a huge fan of the original Jim Bowen series but sad to say l found tonights episode dreadfully boring. Epic gameshow? more like an epic fail!

I do like Alan Carr but felt he was the wrong choice for host. Those that remember the original surely must have been disappointed like me to see such a bland set with no attention to detail like the 90's and that 'bon tempi' keyboard music that played the same 8 bars over and over. I remember the music used to be really catchy, a large production package with plenty of variety played by real musicians?

Dragging it out for an hour just didn't work either, there was no energy and pace as a result. They should have ended the series with The Price is right.. at least that was the best of a bad bunch. rant over lol

Based on the success of this series I expect they’ll definitely look to do more in some form, but I wonder if rather than giving any of them a revival, they might just keep the Epic Gameshow brand going, maybe up it to 2-4 episodes per year of the more well received shows, maybe drop one or two and add some new ones etc.

I think the series has gone well and Alan Carr has been great, but I’m not sure if any of the individual formats within it have done enough for a revival on their own. So the likes of Take Your Pick, Price is Right, Cards etc can just continue as part of Epic Gameshow.

I think the only one that would work as a series is The Price is Right. The rest should be kept to this format, with one episode a year, maybe getting rid of Take Your Pick (I didn’t enjoy that one).

Take Your Pick is the Alan’s best one!
TVMan, Brekkie and DJ Dave gave kudos

A YouTube post says "John [Patrick] told me [YouTube comment writer] the story about when he was asked to write something for this new show [Bullseye], he was told that it had to be upbeat, something people could clap along to, and was definitely not to include any of his usual weird jazz chords (John usually wrote Jazz pieces and is a well known Jazz pianist/performer)" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTx1I_8Af3s

Apparently still gets royalties for Bullseye repeats, which isn't particularly surprising because its documented Alan Hawkshaw gets them as well everytime the Countdown clock music plays... Just shows where the money is in the business really.

This has nothing to do with Alan Carr's version, but I'm just going to take the opportunity to share one of my favourite tweets ever.

John wrote both the ATV 1981 show cues and the Central 1983 show cues, both were incredibly good and arranged and recorded with live musicians, not in the least bit jazzy with 'weird chords' as you refer.
I'm just saying ITV could have sourced this if they had wanted to instead of using inferior recreations; they used the original music for the 'Strike it lucky' episode so clearly had no issue using original compositions.
