No ads have been shown on ITV1 since I've been watching since about 6.30pm.

Just long programme trailers during ad breaks.

Checked a couple of regions and all the the same.

I've seen this happen before on Saturdays (back when TV Burp was on and ITV1 was therefore worth watching Wink )

The rules are they have 40 minutes of ads between 6pm and 11pm, and can show a maximum of 12 minutes of ads per hour. ITV1 pack the ads around their most popular programmes, hence there generally being no ads early or late in the evening. Due to sponsorship commitments though the breaks remain in programmes, so it's an opportunity to show extended versions of promos instead.

The short answer is to pack The X Factor with ads because it'll get them the most money. Works for me. I hate the show so I don't have to cope with adverts in the other shows. Very Happy

There has to be more than 12 minutes of breaks per hour on X-Factor. They seem to break after every audition nowadays.

Oddly, tonights doesn't feel that bad for adverts and I would've expected it to be much worse than usual as its 90 minutes long. Maybe that's just because the bootcamp stage of X Factor tends to drag on a bit.

Remember with The X Factor though there is roughly one minute of singing in every 15, so no wonder it feels like that. One of the worst things OFCOM did though was effectively allowing an extra break in any programme longer than an hour a few years ago, firstly resulting in many hour shows being extended by 10-15 minutes to get the extra break and secondly resulting in shorter parts in shows 90 minutes or longer to benefit. Last Christmas though they were trialling having fewer but longer breaks in one-off dramas - not sure what the outcome of that was, but such shows were definitely better as 4-parters rather than 6-parters.

I miss the days of hour long shows being three parters with a break at 20 past and 20 to

The policy for ITV (and all commercial channels to be fair) seems to be that programmes are viewed by the controllers as interuptions for the adds, which is the main reason that I always record programmes that I want to watch so that I don't have to deal with the insessant breaks.

And only, on average, being 3 minutes long and not 4!

I am sure that fewer commercial breaks commanded higher fees, percentage wise, than what they do today - and I know about multi-channel having an effect but surely the more popular the programme the higher the fee and if less slots then even higher!!!

Advertising is much easier now than it was a few years ago because of online, mobile etc. If the fee was higher for fewer slots then a lot of advertisers would just look at different methods.
