Walt Disney Television is to axe US entertainment channel abc1, which has a valuable Freeview slot.

The channel, which predominantly runs US comedies, goes out on Freeview between 6am and 6pm daily.

Disney said its inability to extend the channel's Freeview hours into peaktime was a key factor in the decision.

Hmm Virgin 1 perhaps taking the slot perhaps if UKTV Bright Ideas switched places? I can't say I've watched ABC1, though that's mainly due to working hours.

UKTV G2 is also rumoured to be joining in the Freeview fun.

Whilst I find abc1 a loss, I only really watch Home Improvement. If Virgin 1 takes the slot, then i'll be concerned into what will happen to the Ftn slot. I would like it to go to UKTV G2, however UKTV have since declined these rumours, so it's not looking very good.

That is a shame. I usually watch ABC1 between 2 and 4.30. Sad
But, I suppose I will have better things to do soon enough.

I will miss watching Home Improvement but that was the only programmes I watched.

You could say that about most of the satellite channels as well though.

Most of them are on a continuous cycle of repeats, all the time, without any new stuff being added.

"Quality through choice" my arse.

Is it just closing from Freeview or going completely?

ABC1 isn't really going to be much of a loss. The American-style way it has commercials directly after opening titles is not something I've ever liked - we know that it will come here eventually, we don't need it to be done prematurely as a gimmick.

Yes the presentation wasn't too bad, and I do like the DOG being in the bottom right of the screen where it's the least intrusive (something which UK broadcasters SHOULD learn from the US), but it's programming is dull and repetitive, centred around the seem continual repeats of the same limited selection of shows.

It's launch was ridiculously overhyped and delayed (it's original premise as 'Daytime from Disney' was in the pipeline for 2 years before launch) and the channel that eventually launched has never really lived up to what was promised.
