650 channels licences in limbo due to Brexit

Up to 650 channels licenced by OFCOM to broadcast across Europe will have to be relicensed in Europe post-Brexit with broadcasting likely to be excluded from any trade agreement. As OFCOM takes a percentage of EU revenues for channels they licence it is likely to severely impact on their revenues as well, even for channels they still licence to broadcast in the UK.

The loss of licenses is an issue for Ofcom, but the bigger issue is where pan-european channels that are currently based in London will go to. If they aren't licensed in the UK then they can't broadcast from the UK

This first came up last summer but was only reported in the Indy and a short mention on BBC Breakfast one weekend:

Then this week Discovery announced that its moving a lot of its European channel operations out of London:

The article differs quite a bit from your summary. Nobody knows the likelihood of such an arrangement, as one has never been made before - if there was a high chance of no agreement, it wouldn't be "in limbo".

Anybody who thinks the UK sets the terms of a trade deal with the EU is a fool, especially when they also thought the UK had no influence on the EU from within the EU, never mind from outside it. In a way this being an almost virtual commodity with no physical transportation across borders makes it quite an easy one to exclude from any deal.

Sadly though less than ten months out we are still very much in "limbo" as a country and for many the bigger issue is the uncertainty rather than what may be in place post-Brexit. Just a shame idiots were allowed to frame the debate - the Express really took the biscuit today when complaining about the EU wanting to enforce border control.

Cancel brexit, it's a f**king mess.

I still believe the entire premise of Brexit was sold on a lie. A big red one that looked like a bus.
And it was a referendum that we never should have had. But anyway...

Broadcasting wise: Well time will tell. It may be as simple as a return to the days of "MTV UK" or whatever where its a separate service from Europe coming out of Camden Lock or wherever. Of course this won't be cheap for broadcasters but its how they used to do it years ago.

Hmmm. Not like the Express to flip-flop. Oh...

We must control borders when we finally leave the EU

For years now the Daily Express has repeatedly warned that this country simply cannot cope with the huge numbers of immigrants coming to these shores.

Initial schedules affected and kick-off times of 1pm, 4pm and 7pm mean of course the news is affected - especially at 6pm where both the afternoon and evening kick-offs impact on it.

Think this might be in the wrong thread. You probably want the "2018 FIFA World Cup Russia" thread. Down the hall, second on the right. Wink

Before the EC/EU, we only had 3 channels. No internet either. What have we done?

It'll be hunger games, I tell ya.

If the UK secures a free trade deal with the EU in goods, but not services, then will TV programmes on a physical medium not being broadcast be classed as goods and TV channels classed as services?
