Although Channel M was at channel 75 whilst 8 will probably be a bit more noticeable for the average viewer. Also by the end the channel was nothing more than simulcasts of Real Radio, the Community Channel and (I think) Euronews so it wasn't exactly the local service it was supposed to be or indeed the local service the new channel is supposed to be.
I discovered something new yesterday - that for a while Channel M was in fact broadcasting on a local DTT MUX to Manchester from Winter Hill.
So there are now no transmission / population reach differences between that and the new proposed local TV service for the city.

The technical parameters proposed for this new batch of local TV stations, is far more robust than those used by Ch M. Indeed, part of their demise was due to poor DTT coverage.

Started off with sheap programmes made by students from University of Salford as well as simulcats of Euronews and filler programmes from a Canadian TV channnel and there was no news either!
I accept it's a better position in the EPG but is that enough? Channel M didn't start out doing lame reruns and simulcasts but that's how it ended up...

Complete vandalism - a perfect description of the loss of the old ITV regions. I miss them. Now that we are where we are though, I think we've got to go forwards. That's why I'd like to see the BBC and ITV get on with trying to sell their programming to the World, bringing money into this country. I'd like them to just provide a Regional News service (for the Government Regions/Home Nations only) and at least 30 minutes of Regional Magazine programming. We could then have Local and Regional TV (and I'd like to see ITV kept to these limited Regional promises). Use the given Licence Fee money to start and advertise a National Hub website for Local TV (and the individual Local TV websites) and start from there. Within a few years, everyone could know the site and IPTV could be the norm.[/quote]
Amended...after more thought, I don't think we should lose what we have (in fact we should gain a touch more from ITV in my opinion). I think there is potential for both Local TV and Regional TV to exist together given the right conditions...hence an amendment of my proposal.
Local TV - my thoughts continue to be as stated above (via Internet/IPTV).
BBC - Regional News and Programming as present. No cutbacks.
ITV - An amended plan of ITV's proposed Regional News plans...the proposed 17 News sub-regions showing the following programming...with the following terms for the entire length of ITV plc's Licences.
3 three minutes sub-regional Bulletins of Regional News during Daybreak.
5 minutes Bulletin of sub-regional News at Lunchtime.
20 minutes sub-regional News News + 10 minutes Pan-Regional News at 6pm (Evening).
5 minutes sub-regional News after News At Ten.
+ a 30 minute Pan-Regional (almost identical to the Government Regions) Magazine programme detailing Politics/Current Affairs/Regional Issues.
