I was actually going to ask that question just now - which broadcasters in Europe do broadcast in widescreen? I know you've listed a few but who are the 'others' you mention?

I wasn't sure - otherwise I'd have listed them.

Some produce in 16:9 but don't have 16:9 outlets, some just "fake" 16:9 in 4:3 studios.

From memory - many of the digital pay-TV operations around Europe run 16:9 channels, however I don't think France or Italy have main broadcasters in 16:9 yet (I think the French TNT platform is specifically legislated to be 4:3 only for SD, with 16:9 reserved for HD?)

I think the German ARD/ZDF services have 16:9 output on digital, and Pro7 are running a part time HD 16:9 service, as are Premier. Not sure about TVE in Spain. Pretty sure RAI in Italy are 4:3 only.

Think NOS and RTBF may have 16:9 output in Netherlands and Belgium respectively... Suspect RTP in Portugal is 4:3 only.

ORF in Austria do stuff in HD - and the Viennese New Year concert has been HD 16:9 for a while - so they may be 16:9 domestically?

No operator runs 16:9 services in Spain nowadays. Anyway, many productions (especially those commissioned by public broadcasters like TVE) are made in 16:9 and later shown letterboxed. Two series ('De moda' and 'Al filo de la ley') are being shot in HDTV, but are shown at standard definition.

Canal+ Spain used to broadcast a 16:9 version of its main premium channel, but it was replaced with Canal+ ...30 (the same channel, 30 minutes later).

Canal+ France has recently launched Canal+ HiTech (or something similar), which is 16:9.
