Also, Terry makes the point about Germany, France, UK and Spain finishing in the last 4 - but what about Italy. Do they have no involvement with Eurovision?

Taken from another website:

Italy's absence from the ESC has two basic reasons:

1. RAI (the Italian National Broadcaster) used to select its ESC participant through the San Remo festival and because of the bad italian results in the last years of Italy's participation in the ESC, RAI decided to "protect" the galmour and the prestige of the San Remo festival winners from the bad publicity that potential ESC rankings would give them by withdrawing from the ESC.

2. RAI officials have negatively commented in various occasions the enlargement of the ESC towards the east and expressed the opinion that they could not see Italy in a future ESC where the majority of participating countries would belong to east Europe.

My two cents:

Another factor that most Italians don't even watch the ESC, RAI wouldn't want to lose ratings. I think they haven't even broadcasted it live in the past couple of years.

thanks edward, I was wondering where the Italians had got too, I don't really understand how Israel has got into Europe all of a sudden, it dosen't make sense to me, in Italy they watched it via BBC Prime.

As to the graphics, yes I expected it to way over the safe areas, I'm afraid there's no such things as safe areas on European telly, not that there is so much production in widescreen in the first place, shame UK did badly it deserved better, but there you go.

I'd love to see France, Spain, Germany and us to pull out of the whole competition. Then see how they manage to afford to put the show together Laughing

I get the feeling it's because most of us Brits hate Europe - they refuse to vote for us. Javine deserved a hell of a lot more votes than she got.

I agree. The sooner we withdraw funding from this joke the better. Let the other countries fund it for once. The voting system is a joke. The major nations won't win for a long to come at the current rate.

Politics! Politics! Politics! Thats all that can be said. My favourite was the Denmark entry and the three blondes...

I only really watch it for the wit of Wogan and the scoreboard. "Ant and Shriek!" Laughing

No doubt Javine will be spun into ITV's 'celebrity' reality TV web in a few years time Rolling Eyes

Israel have been in the Eurovision Song Contest for as long as I can remember and almost every year I've heard people ask why they take part when they're not exactly a European country. The answer's quite simple: the Israeli broadcaster IBA is a member of the EBU and is therefore eligible to take part. Any member of the EBU is allowed to enter a song into the Eurovision Song Contest. They're all able to show it (and any other Eurovision event for that matter) and use the Eurovision network of circuits and satellite lines for the sending and/or receiving of material to/from other member broadcasters. There's a lot more to Eurovision (which is really the name of the operation of the network of circuits etc.) than the Song Contest.

It's interesting that RAI don't show the contest at all these days: I didn't know that, but I can undrestand why if the popularity of the contest in some countries is limited to a certain audience. They can all watch via BBC Prime and get Terry into the bargain if they want! The BBC decided not to take part in or show the other big Eurovision event "Jeux Sans Frontieres" many, many years ago, but it's still going in other EBU member countries I understand!

I don't think there's any chance of the big four pulling out of the contest - Eurovision matters too much in terms of a European network of lines: you'd be amazed how much news gets to the BBC via a Eurovision circuit for example. And BBC TV Centre is one of the big Eurovision hubs for switching purposes (the other biggie is in Geneva I believe). There might well be another rethink on how the voting goes soon - I perosnally think that televoting is as good as it might get, but sitting through 39 countries presenting their results was tedious in the extreme. Maybe only the finalists' countries should vote?

Here's a good link to what the EBU does in brief:

Anyone know any more about why the BBC are so far refusing to show the 50th anniversary thing in Denmark this October? Surprised if it doesn't even appear on BBC3...

Just to clear up this hugely common misconception :

It is the EuroVISION Song Contest - not the EuroPEAN Song Contest.

Eurovision is a group of, mainly, public service and/or state broadcasters, and members of the EBU can chose to request entry for the Song Contest. Originally the EBU / Eurovision operation was quite small, as TV was only available in a few countries when it started, and these were mainly Western European nations (there was a separate Eastern European operation the other side of the iron curtain) The Song Contest was launched in the 50s as a way of exploiting the links between countries to create a show that appealed to all - and music works better than documentary, drama and comedy across language barriers.

However as TV technology improved, and more countries started TV services, the EBU expanded. Israel was never going to be part of a Middle Eastern operation - so instead joined the EBU. There are a number of North African countries who are also members, as are some other Middle Eastern Countries. (Lebanon was due to be the 40th country this year, but had to drop out over "Israal" issues)

So - the upshot is it is the EBU Song Contest, not the EU Song Contest!

I think the contest has really suffered since the re-structuring. I think the longer voting really can be quite tedious, and because they cram it in so much there is less time spent with the hosts (as annoying as they were).

I think most of the pre-2003 contests have been far better than Istanbul and Kiev. Anyone else think that? I really enjoyed 2001,2002 and 2003, mainly because of the tension of the voting and the interaction with the hosts. Even Soren and Natascha.

Isn't ITV an EBU member? Could both the BBC and ITV put an entry in, in theory?
