'social media driven catchup' (March 2012)

Very good logo but I have to agree with Brekkie on this; I'm skeptical of the case being really strong enough to warrant a whole TV channel providing this particular type of service.

It's no different from the +1 channels, launching another channel entirely full of repeats is just an easy way for Channel 4 to gain additional advertising revenue without having to go to the bother of actually creating any new content. They're not there to provide a 'service'.

I think it will do very good business for them.

How many times have you heard people go on about a show, then you mean to watch it on catch up and completely forget?

I just think this will round-up a lot of these 'forgetters' into watching the big shows they've heard people go on about, simply because seeing on the EPG will remind them.

You're still reliant on the schedulers though to include the show you want in their schedule. Not sure what the plan is now but when it was originally talked about it was similar to Film4 Weekly - so basically the same schedule nightly.

Ha, I see what they did there:

Digital Spy posted:
Channel 4's bold new channel aimed at reinventing catch-up television will launch on all the main UK digital television platforms on July 4 , it has been confirmed.

In March, Channel 4 chief executive David Abraham announced 4seven, a new network which will allow viewers to recap on the Channel 4 shows that have caused the most online "buzz" over the past seven days.

For example, active discussion around shows such as Big Fat Gypsy Weddings or US drama Homeland on social media, blogs and online forums would give those programmes another spin on 4seven.

The channel will launch across all major television platforms on July 4, Channel 4 has confirmed. Channel numbers for Virgin Media and Freesat are not yet known, but it is thought that 4seven will launch at channel 47 on Freeview in post-digital switchover areas, and replace More4 +2 on Sky at position 269 on the EPG.

4seven was met with a decidedly mixed response from Digital Spy readers in March, with many saying that there are already enough ways to catch up on programmes after their live broadcast, including on-demand platform 4oD and personal video recorder (PVR) services, such as Sky+, Freeview+ and Virgin Media TiVo.

However, viewing via video on-demand, PVRs and other means only makes up a relatively small percentage of overall TV viewing, as the majority is still done live while the viewers are sat on the couch with the remote control.

Moreover, many viewers still claim that they are missing the major TV programmes, particularly older audiences, which is a real issue for broadcasters who have invested in the content.

4seven will ensure Channel 4 shows are given maximum chances to reach their audience, but the network is also about more closely integrating the online "buzz" around programmes with the broadcast networks, even incorporating this into the look and feel of 4seven.

Discussing the new approach to catch-up TV in March, David Abraham said: "It's a variation which we think goes with the grain of increased optionality but that combines the continued strengths of digital TV with the opportunities of social media.

"As such we hope that it will be an example of how the TV network will continue to adapt and evolve in order to survive in this most revolutionary of decades for media consumption."

Geddit? It's 4/7 because the channel's 4seven and it's on channel 47! Hilarious (although seriously, it's quite clever and the number will be pretty easy to remember).

Only recently came across Red Bee's blog, which covers quite a few topics people on here will be interested in. One of the posts asks quite a few good questions about how the scheduling of this channel, reacting to social media buzz, will work:

Quote:
Then there are programmes that generate massive impact on their first showing but don’t repeat well. Ever tried watching Million Pound Drop the day after? When it’s live and interactive it’s compelling - but when it’s not, well… meh.

And what if mischievous viewers decide to game the system? Imagine a Twitter campaign where users collude to ensure an anodyne show like Countdown will trend, just so you have to show it on Channel 4Seven. Would you?

And what if Channel 4 launched a sitcom which fails? It’s trending on Twitter with people tipping metaphorical buckets of ordure all over it. It’s damaging the Channel 4 brand and should be quietly moved to a ‘Dignitas slot’ in the small hours. But does its genuine buzz mean it gets a prime slot on Channel 4Seven?

No, it's just a normal channel showing programmes from Channel 4. The rest is just hype. Sure, it might show programmes that have been mentioned on twitter and facebook but they know well in advance which programmes are going to mentioned on social networks and so prepare the schedule accordingly.

A bit of info on how this will work:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012/jun/03/channel-4-4seven-catch-up

Basically weeknights at 8pm and 10pm will be dedicated to show getting the buzz from Twitter etc., while 9pm will be the shows from C4 at 9pm the previous night. The weekends will be "multiple repeats" of the best rated shows from the week before.

I'm still not convinced this will work - for example Homeland has probably been the C4 show with the most buzz this year, but their rights just won't allow for anything more than the one repeat it currently gets on C4 anyway. I just think ultimately it'll morph into some kind of C4+24 - surely the most likely shows to end up at 8pm and 10pm are those from 8pm and 10pm the previous night.

I assume this will replace More4+2 on Sky?

Yep, that's just a placeholder.

Any idea why they've done that? It only broadcasts for a few hours Monday - Friday and it's in the wrong section of the EPG. Are they just claiming an EPG slot (rather than an actual position)?

Just seen a trail before the beginning of A Short History of Everything Else showing the graphics for the first time. The 7 part of the logo seems to jump out a bit more than the 4.
