I think there was a thing a while back where they were unable to add any more channels, despite not all 1000 slots being filled, because of a software problem with some of the older boxes being unable to cope with over 400 (or whatever the number was) channels on the EPG.

I believe this is still the case. I also believe that the Channel 4 regions, ITV1 regions etc. contribute to this number, even though they don't take up a channel number, as they are still part of the EPG but are hidden from viewers out of the regions they are serving. I'm not sure if the Irish channels contribute to the number as well or if Sky run another EPG for Ireland.

Has this ever been rectified? Surely a box swap for their cheapest SD box would be beneficial in terms of potential advertising increases?

The thing is, I don't think there is a long queue of channels waiting to launch, this isn't 1999. I'm sure if there was the demand from broadcasters, Sky would replace the boxes of the few (if any) subscribers that are still using boxes with low memory.

I'm not sure it would free up an EPG slot, at least not on Sky. I think even channels not on the EPG take up a position, so all the Channel 4 regions take up a position each even though no one receives all of them.

I was under the impression they only take up transponder space, such is the complexity of tuning in an alternative ITV region. The BBC are different of course, having all their regions up in the 900s.

There is indeed a limitation on the number of EPG channels that can be processed by the older STBs.

The current EPG has 621 entries (549 TV channels and 72 radio). However, the older SD STBs only show the 64 HD channel numbers, not their listings, so that reduces the amount of data they are having to process.

There may be a few million of these boxes in use, and that may be quite costly for Sky to replace free-of-charge.

There is a separate EPG for Ireland, although it's generally only the Irish/UK PSBs that occupy different positions.

The DOG seems to have been the 4:3 version stretched to 16:9 throughout today's engineering tests and all throughout Supersize vs Skinny and Embarrassing Bodies. It's been corrected now with 'Gordon Behind Bars'.

Also worth mentioning is that the ECP initially used a basic sans serif font during the end of Supersize vs Skinny but this was corrected in the credits of Embarrassing Bodies.

Seems a bit daft that Channel 4 itself will be airing a repeat of tonight's 24 Hours in A&E tomorrow night at 10. Especially since 4Seven will be repeating it tomorrow night at 9. Oh and Gordon Behind Bars will be repeated tomorrow on C4 at 11 as well as at 10 on 4Seven. You'd think 4Seven would perhaps reduce the need for such primetime repeats on C4 but clearly not in this case.

That's why this channel really comes at the wrong time for them - most 9pm shows now seem to get a 10pm or 11pm repeat within a few days.
