Yep - the quality of the source is even more important these days. Just because the resulting feed is VHS quality - doesn't mean that you can feed it a VHS quality source.
I believe this is one of the driving forces behind the BBC upgrading their internal vision circuits from 34Mbs compressed and 140Mbs PAL to 270Mbs uncompressed component digital. (Which will also carry lightly compressed HD at much higher quality than a 34Mbs satellite circuit)
