What is Shipwrecked doing on a music channel?
I hope this isn't going down the MTV route...

The 0.3% share for The Hits is down to it being on Freeview but it would probably still hold 0.1% or 0.2% just because of the channel name. They own 3 channels with a 0.0% share, and Smash Hits is essentially the same channel as The Hits but The Hits manages a bigger share and would manage a bigger share on Sky/Freesat/Virgin Media alone. I don't see why they're axing The Hits altogether to make way for Smash Hits when there are less successful and similar channels they own.

Smash Hits is a more famous name though and the Box is longer established. The Hits is probably the least well known brand in their portfolio - it's a brand extension of their FM stations.... and none of them use the name 'The Hits'

It's worth remembering that The Hits (like TMF) only came into existence to get a slot on Freeview. You can hardly get a sheet of paper between the formats of The Box, The Hits and Smash Hits, it's not worth them keeping all 3

Oh I know that I just don't see the point in axing the most watched thats all. The Hits is also a radio station (channel 711 on Freeview) just like Smash Hits (712). I know Smash Hits is a more established brand but surely they could make more money out of The Hits? Its essentially the same channel under a different name.

To be fair when The Hits Radio started it was slightly different, it was more like a National simulcast of Key 103 (Manchester), but it has simply gown down the same route as the other stations.

Still annoying that 4Music's still going to have Teleshopping between 6.30am and 9.00am, considering that all TMF show at that time is Nick Jr. If they have to put it on, why not between 3.30am and 6.00am? When fewer people are watching...

But as you say, that diffrence in audience (which is minimal anyway) is purely down to the fact that it's on Freeview..

There's nothing really special or unique about The Hits or its name. Smash Hits is the more famous name and it makes sense for the 4 music channel to be on Freeview to get the biggest audience for their new investment

I think you answered your own question there! Laughing

More people are available to watch and so they'll make more money from the teleshopping!

I guess E4 Music is continuing then, so the idea is probably to shift viewers over to E4 in that period.

I think The Hits should be removed from Freeview (well from a business perspective anyway) but I think it should carry on on Sky. It could manage a larger audience than Smash Hits does and is a very similar channel. But then there is nothing stopping them 6 months down the line putting the Smash Hits name back onto the channel and that will get them an extra few viewers/bit more money from advertisers.

Didn't The Hits show Teleshopping until 9am a while back? By the looks of it they are just renaming the channel and adding a few Channel 4 programmes in at peak time ...

EDIT: They still do show Teleshopping.

Just seen a promo on 4 - voiceover seems to be done by Anne Foy (ex CBBC). Wonder if she will be a face of the channel?

What would be the point of that considering (as you admit yourself) that they are very similar?

Why would they invest in a new slot on satellite and an extra playout facility just to keep The Hits running just for the sake of it when they own 2 other channels doing almost exactly the same thing. If they are so similar (and you're right, they are!) then there's no problem with ditching one

Tom0 - what is it about 'The Hits' in particular that you like?

Its not really that I like The Hits. Most music channels are the same and The Hits isn't my first choice anyway. I just think its odd that they're axing the most watched music channel altogether in favour of ones which [statistically] don't even have an audience. I know if The Hits was to not continue on Freeview but on other formats the audience wouldn't be as strong, but I think there would still actually be an audience.
