Ach he does not, he views the contest the way most of the British people do - if anyting slightly more affectionately. We don't want Ant & Dec or anyone too 'cool'. The only suitable replacement I can think of would be Jonathan Ross.

How very ironic.

Istanbul is probably about as safe as any other major European city at the moment - not very much at all. But I'm sure that security will be paramount as ever, and that it'll run pretty much as smoothly as possible from that point of view.

What really does worry me is whether or not the contest will run at all. TRT are the Turkish State Broadcaster organising the event and, well, they're well known in this country for its claustrophic bureaucracy, and things just don't get done. Don't be too surprised if all the lights go out because somebody forgot to sign out an extra generator or Wogan isn't allowed into the stadium because his name on the security clear-out list is spelt "Terry Vogan"!

I wouldn't worry - like Latvia and Estonia for the last two years, the Swedes are providing the TV production facilities (with a bit of help from the Finns I expect). That will mean 4 out of the 5 last Eurovision contests have been produced by a team co-ordinated pretty much by SVT? And who can blame Eurovision for chosing them - the SVT MelodiFestival (the huge contest where Sweden choses its Eurovision Entry) competition makes Pop Idol look quite unimpressive. The Swedes really know how to make great eventy music telly.

(And yes I do have the last two year MelodiFestivals on DVD... Sad? Me?)

Lorraine Kelly will be announcing the British votes this year - from Old Crompton Street (bum sex alley for those of you who don't know). Wink

Old Compton St I think you mean...

The BBC Eurovision Message Board hints that Lorraine may be jetting around quite a bit on the Saturday - how quickly can you get from Istanbul to London and back?

My personal favourite songs are Ukraine - Ruslana: Wild Dances, Belgium - Xandee: 1 Life and Switzerland - Piero Esteriore & the MusicStars: Celebrate! (Switzerland's song is extremely euro-poppy!)

What songs are your favourites? Where will you be for the big day?

Stay tuned in this (Official Wink) thread for more news!

Thanks,
Joel.

Switzerland!!!??? Sounds like it would be more at home at a Pontins Holiday Camp...

I've seen the official videos - so have seen the entrants perform as well as heard the songs.

My faves in no particular order, and not referring to any lists, so from memory :

Finland - soooo camp (the bloke singing it wore little angel wings) and very catchy
Belgium - probably the danciest and very poppy. Possibly a bit too much for traditional Eurovision. I liked it the first time I heard it - and it is memorable.
Serbia - lovely, lovely song, but politically will people vote for Serbia?
Bosnia - very catchy, whispered lyrics, be interesting to hear it live. Very camp.
Sweden - great song in Swedish, but they are entering in English nad the lyrics are a bit dull. She is a great performer with charisma, and the Swedes always try their best.
Malta - very odd, but has loads of twiddly bits. (Key change, woman warbling operatically) Malta have had some great songs in the last couple of years and deserve to win - they really try hard.
Cyprus - not a fave myself, but very credible, and loads of friends like it.
Germany - again - a bit loungy for me, but others are raving.
Norway - quite catchy and a great tune - not sure if it will (but didn't a Norwegian win World Idol? Maybe their year!)
Iceland - nice tune, good looking boy, but if you speak English the lyrics and rhyming will have you cringing. You literally can guess the next line - well I could.
Albania - if you've seen their video - bless... Quite catchy though - hope they get through to the final.
Russia - quite a poppy song - you get the feeling they really want to win.
France - cute boy (and this must be the first time in many, many years they haven't entered either a waif-like teenagv girl or a belting Dion-esque woman)
Spain - cute boy - song is pretty much a Ricky Martin sound-alike. (In the official video he is wearing, or not wearing, a different set of clothes in each shot...)
Greece - good looking bloke - be interesting to see how much he is wearing...

The ones I like least :
Switzerland, Portugal, Ireland (I know others love it - but really!), The Netherlands, Austria.

The rest I don't really remember - oh yeah - Andorra and Monaco are pretty bland.

A typo, I do apologise.

Anyhow, she'll not actually be on Old Compton Street, she'll be green-screening it, so she could do that from Istanbul easily.

Hmm - not sure that is "legal" under Eurovision rules. AIUI the national votes must be broadcast from the city that the back-up jury are resident in/and the televotes collated from? (The BBC wanted to deliver the votes from Edinburgh a while back and weren't allowed to?) Or maybe they just have to LOOK like they are being broadcast from there...

I suspect Lorraine will be green-screening from TVC - unless the BBC have got a special dispensation (and are playing their Old Compton Street CSO backing in off VT in Istanbul?) ISTR that for one of the recent contests (may have been the truly awful Junior Eurovision) - that Malta forgot to run their CSO backing until after they were on-air - so you saw that lovely grey BetaSP noise bar behind the presenter.

On the other hand I'm not a great fan of Germany's song (a bit too "Doo - Doo" -ey for me! I also really like Portugal's upbeat tune - but I'm with you on Ireland (Very much like a Westlife spin-off [no surprises though - it is written by Bryan McFadden!]) and The Netherland's song is a bit... odd! I also don't like Austria's song (why can't they give us another Alf Poier!!).
I quite like Andorra - it's got a lovely little tune that's pleasant to listen to - Monaco is fantastic, a bit like a showtune at the start with a nice tune and beat!

What I don't understand is why do people like the Cyprus song?! It would be moderately OK if we didn't have that 16 year old from Kent singing it! She sounds like a 9 year old singing in the school play with the Mum in the audience with tears in her eyes!
The Latvian song has grown on me, but not in leaps and bounds! It's an OK song but is a bit boring in some bits!!

Thank you,
Joel.

The Cyprus song is beautiful. So melodic and touching. Its so much more than a eurovision song! And the singer may be from Kent or wherever but her parents are both Greek Cyprot and she's fluent in the language. Shes also lived there part of her life aswell!!
