I guess I should've known - naturally, most people here are media-savvy, and have the latest technology! I doubt this poll will represent the country as a whole, though it will be accurate for members of this site...

When Sony launched the original Playstation they also launched a 16" 16:9 set (in fact two models - one with NICAM stereo, the other with stereo via external inputs only)

These were really popular in 16:9 TV studios as small preview monitors - and occasionally appeared in-vision. The original News 24 summary position (as used in Europe Direct for the N24 only news bulletin!) had a few in the background...

For the record I have a 28" 16:9 set in the lounge, with other 4:3 sets in other rooms.

When the PAL standard was written it was written for 16:9, we never used it as manufacturers had two problems: 1) technology 2) most of the market was 4:3 for things like NTSC, SECAM etc. We have only just got 16:9 as other countries such as the USA have started to use it with HDTV being a competitor so a lot of TV sets support 16:9 and HDTV. Well when I say just got, Sony have been making 16:9 TVs for about 20 years.

Are you referring to the Sony ones that used to be around ages ago, but aren't now?

They had loads on sale at the ITV Digital auction last year.

I have 1 25" 4:3 TV in the living room and a 14" 4:3 TV in the bedroom. However, I can't stand widescreen (as I think it's pointless) and would not swap my 4:3 sets for anything wide. And for the record, I have a Nokia ondigital box connected to the bedroom portable and it's set to centre cut-out mode, but the modes are changed where necessary.
