Personally, I ignore HD, I only care about SD. If you are stupid enough to shell out for a massive TV that you don't actually need (I'm happy with my 14 inch 4:3 CRT), then expect to see massive pixels or fuzzyness on old 4:3 TV programmes.

Even on the CRT I put out of pasture last year you could discern the difference between downscaled SD and HD. Try it yerself!

It also depends on the type of TV you get, mine can upscale SD 4:3/16:9 decently.

Yes, when it takes over 2 seconds to change channel then you know it's HD.

I got rid of my Sky HD box and went back to SD because HD was just too slow. I watch things on Freeview HD if it is a planned viewing but for everyday use I stick with SD.

I don't believe in them. Anyway, this is a true story.

If you set your TV to 1080i it is no slower to change channels showing HD than SD.

How important is a programme that you can't wait another .5 of a second for the channel to change??

From what I remember, it wasn't the TV being slow it was the Sky HD box. It was slow to change between SD channels too. This was with a Samsung HD box compared to a Pace SD box which I am using now.

I don't know. Which programme are you talking about? As I said, if I am turning over to watch a programme on the BBC or something I will often watch on Freeview HD but if I am turning over to find something to watch, which might involving checking several channels I will use SD because HD is just too slow. My time is very precious to me.

I think what Stuart meant is setting your Sky box to output 1080i all the time, so they the output isn't always switching between HD and SD, this is what's causing the delay.

And if you read his post, he said that was not the cause of the problem. In any case, HD channels seem to take noticeably longer to switch to on our HD box (we're outputting 1080i). It's not slower than our (ancient) Sky box that we had, but is probably slower than the newer style Sky box that the HD box replaced.

Indeed, that's what I was meaning to say.

Switching between channels (HD, SD) takes very little time. Perhaps David had a faulty box.
