2nd November this year - idea for the BBC

(June 2001)

This year, on Friday November 2nd, is the 65th birthday of BBC Television (but I don't think it's retiring!)

An idea...... no doubt there'll be trailers promoting it with a couple of nice nostalga programmes, but here's an idea.

All day, on News 24, they could play different music each hour from the news archives. I was just listening to the stuff from Isonstine's site - I mean, there's even the News at One 1993 Headline Bed. It'd be great nostalga - everyone knows and relates to the BBC news themes (not just obsessives like us) - and I think it'd be a really great idea to use them during the day on News 24 to celebrate the special day.

You could use the themes from One, Six and Nine and 1988 and 1993, as well as the earlier ones.

It can't be that difficult, so come on Nicky, why not suggest it to the powers that be?

Any thoughts, anyone?

It would be nice! I think BBC ONE might be doing something special for the occasion. Maybe they could mix all the old logos together into one. The BBC Balloon spinning in the middle in front of a mirror. Classic but would also be very scary!

65 years isnt that important to the BBC, and anyway, why would they want to spend an entire day playing old music from decades, and even centuries gone by?!

Did the Beeb have a special day on November 2nd 1996, November 2nd 1991....I cannot recall they did, so I expect November 2nd 2001, will pass rather un-noticed!

Yes, I agree. However, many critics have noted how popular nostalga-TV has become of late (such as the popularity of the BBC I love 1970s series, hence ITV's forthcoming copy version), so I think that they might do something this time. After all, they made a huge fuss of Eastenders' 15th anniversary - why's 15 so special?

I guess we'll have to wait and see......

Ah yes, but 17million people like EastEnders. I very much doubt 17million people have discussions on television presentation matters! As much as I'd like to see a programme, why would the Beeb 'waste' airtime on a subject like this (which would probably get fewer ratings than a programme in the same slot) when they could be filling it with popular shows like Changing Rooms or Ground Force? It may not be right, but it's what'll happen.

As for idents, it sadly won't happen. The branding of the channel is far more important, so seeing a 1970's BBC1 ident will look out of place introducing a programme today, even if it was a programme celebrating 65 years.

Cheers, Asa

I wasn't on about idents, I just meant using music from BBC News past on News 24.

Never mind. I know deep down that it won't happen, but I thought I'd give it a try.
Close the thread if you wish.

I know Ian, I was just replying to Bail's message with his suggestion about idents.

(The music on N24 would be great though!)

Cheers, Asa
